    The McGowan Collection

Fedex are smart - they mail you an invoice about a week after delivery, just when you've thrown the packaging away !!!!

    The McGowan Collection

What's that and where would I find it ?

    The McGowan Collection

I've just received another invoice from Fedex charging 20% VAT for a numismatic item from Stacks Bowers - I've written to them saying it should be 5% but I'm not holding my breath. Any advice chaps ?

    LCA December

    Doesn't look right to me.
  5. Ditto !!!! Must be a tax avoidance scheme........
  6. Exceptional obverse, Mike, with a bit of crow's foot thrown in and very nice reverse. And a really pleasing colour. Provenance ?

    Roman silver id

I think that Jerry is suggesting you Google "Thelwell".........
  8. Most of you will know that bidding online through the-saleroom.com incurs an additional cost of 3% of the hammer price. I've always felt this a bit of a rip-off but now I see that the surcharge is going up to 4.95% on 1st November. Beware, you unsuspecting bidders !

    Pennies High grade.

And as I said above, the Home pages of each website explain the rarity codes used. The rare penny site uses Freeman's rarity codes and the pennyvarieties site uses Peck and Gouby codes. The fact that Gouby and Freeman both use a prefix of "R" can be confusing but the two sites are independent and do not cross refer or compare.

    Pennies High grade.

Thanks for the advice. Read the Home pages and you'll see the references to Freeman's and Gouby's rarity codes.
  11. Got a nice 1862 F39A last week. Fantastic condition but cleaned - pity but it was cheap.

    Newbie Looking For Advice.

Hi Lucy Collect whatever you find interesting or attractive. Some. like me, collect pennies because of the huge range of different varieties but others collect different denominations. Only you will know what strikes a chord. As Chris says, buy a book (they aren't expensive), look through and decide whether something captures your imagination !
  13. Brilliant - mystery solved. But "why Wood ?"............. I guess to preserve anonymity.

    More Pennies

    Just a decent F10 ?

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Quickly, buy it before it's snapped up..... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-1866-Victoria-One-Penny-Stamped/183473333688?hash=item2ab7dce5b8:g:cLQAAOSwszVbuTHM
  16. This "Wood" character only gets mentioned at the end of bidding and merely signifies that it was a book (commission) bidder. It is the last word uttered by the auctioneer before the next lot.
  17. Michael Gouby has just told me that the "F6A Proof" has been returned to DNW - surprise, surprise !
  18. This may have been asked before but my Chrome browser says that this site is not secure. Is that a problem ?
  19. If he does, then he has the best coin collection in the world.
  20. I listened to the F6A bidding and there were several bids so I think someone bought it - they'll be disappointed.
  21. Is this a DNW peculiarity or a general auction custom ? I've never heard it before.
  22. I thought that it would do a lot better - it was so obviously an F14, in a decent grade albeit with severe die cracks.
  23. An individual or just code for a book bidder ?
  24. Well done Mike. Someone I know checked out the F6A and assures me it's not proof.
  25. Interesting to watch part 2 today. Almost all the high quality copper and bronze went at good prices to a buyer (dealer) called "Wood". Some surprises - the 1860 E over P ( a genuine rarity) sold for £3000 less than it cost from LCA ! The F6 that they claimed to be F6A proof went for £1k.
