Baldwins and St James Unite
Colin88 replied to mhcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
This is not a new JV...Baldwins and Fenton have already been and already were in an established partnership from 2004 until they divorced in 2012. Personally I'm with Jaggy on this one, I've always found Baldwins incredibly arrogant and of the 'me expert, you dickead' school of customer interfacing. Again, personally I dont see how NP joining as MD is a great move, with what must be a conflict of interest?. Whatever the current arrangement is between Baldwins and St James's I'm sure that one or other will be looking to be top dog and eat the weaker one ....my money would be on Fenton as top dog. Has anyone dealt with Sovereign Rareties yet? -
1934 Wreath Crown Fake or Genuine
Colin88 replied to 1934 Wreath Crown's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Although Coins of England 2017 may suggest otherwise , I would argue that the price of 1934 Crowns has actually decreased in recent times because of so many of the (mainly Chinese) fakes that are currently on the market and that buyers have and that buyers should be, extremely wary of spending £thousands on these coins. Also interesting to see that in the Coins of England book is that the 1933 Crown is asterisked as a coin that is often faked but not so the 1934...in my experience of collecting these I have very rarely seen a 1933 fake but have seen many 1934 fakes.....and 27 and 28 come that. -
This is probably a daft question but other than the type of finish is there any way of telling apart the proof or specimen strike from the currency strike on the 1887 Gold (£5 down to half sov), like you can on the silver. Some of the early struck currency gold coins look incredibly proof like ......is there something else that can differentiate? Thanks

Royal mint commemoratives
Colin88 replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
99% of Commemoratives and almost anything that you buy from the RM these days, with very few exceptions, is only ever going to be worth the metal value (if they're silver or gold) at resale....could be worse, you could have bought from those calling themselves London Mint and Westminster Mint and then you are looking at about 10% of what you paid for your coins ! -
Spink don't have a retail coin business....if they 'wanted' it and thought it was worth it they would only have suggested it going into one of their auctions.

Does anyone have or know of anyone that has an 1887 Long set (£5 down) Specimen set, case......that might want to sell it? Thanks

Half crown 1905
Colin88 replied to interNumi's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Personally , imo , I would say it looks ok and I've seen quite a few !.....the good news is that most of the fakes that were produced in the 80's by XX are normally high grade and you can spot the broken I in 'qui' which is the easiest way of telling the fake 05 without a magnifying glass. -
Has anyone ever used NGC or got a view about them? Thanks
-
.....has anyone had any dealings with then recently ??
-
Coinkat and AXDA ......thanks for your replies .....good advice...

As an aside, has anyone ever managed to get through the gatekeepers and actually speak to Steve at LC ? Also, I suspect that Bill Pugsley will make a move at some point and actually buy CGS.....you heard it here first !

DNW offer free slabbing to anyone putting their coins into their Auctions.....personally I have always done well with selling certain slabbed coins as apposed to them being in the raw...particularly high grade G4 and W4 sovs and Victorian silver for some reason...copper / bronze less so....my experience any way. (Although I guess its difficult to say without selling an identical raw coin in the same sale and comparing the results)
-
I recently sent in an attractive NVF 1860 mule (F9) to PCGS for slabbing and grading..so not a washer and pretty obvious what it was to anyone who wasn't blind ....and, yep it came back as an ordinary 1860...I think that I bought this one off Bernie many many years ago.....will have to break it out .....grrrrrr
-
Good lord and there's me just thinking I would slab a coin to see if it fetches more when I put it in auction....and all along , according to those people on the high moral ground here , what I am is just an uneducated collector of 40 years....well, slap my thighs and paint me pink Blackadder....
-
Well that put me in my place didn't it....I'm uneducated because I wanted it stabbed as I suspectedby doing so it might fetch a bet

Customs charges - how do they work ?
Colin88 replied to secret santa's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Customs charges in my experience are a mystery and not easy to check or dispute much in the same way as mobile phone bills. -
What's this all about
Colin88 replied to Gary D's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
As this stands its totally unworkable and will never happen. A bit like I read this morning that doctors will be fined for over subscribing pills ..or the one where you will be be fined for hogging the middle lane on motorways..and all the other nonsense laws that they threaten us with....its just scaremongering by government bodies to keep us all under control.... -
Idiots collecting Freeman numbers
Colin88 replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have to say though that in my experience of buying and selling as a collector that Penny collectors are the worst to deal with.....If I had an 1877 ND in Fine for £50 on ebay I would get emails saying that they would buy it for £10 as its low grade but really they are waiting for one in BU for £60 and to let them know when I get one ....sorry, just my experience. -

Colin88 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Is it me?...I've gone into Prices Realised for the June auction a couple of days ago. Page 1 starts at Lot No 1659 ....then Page 2 goes straight in to the MAY 2015 auction...?? Computers...they're just a passing fad... -
St James Auction today
Colin88 replied to pokal02's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I hae trickled out the surplus over the years. I even have a handful left to go, but if I was to sell the collection I would then have to start again. I don't believe I could reassemble it in either a reasonable timeframe or in suitable quality. The last 5 or 6 years have been very difficult to find things to add at reasonable prices. I've bought and sold two significant collections over the last 40 years...the last was about 2 years ago....I think I'm about to embark on the third ....I cant get it out of my system.!.... So if anyone out there has a single collection of any English or Scottish coins (Gold, silver, bronze, hammered or milled ) they want to sell in one lot to get me kick started as I'm knocking on a bit, then do please let me know ! -
