  1. I’d be happy with the 37 penny on its own without chasing the set .. Sov Rareties had the sixpence a while ago at £55k
  2. Although the 1808 penny is unique , the 1937 is an iconic piece whereas the 1808 is not .. so it will have more global appeal therefore I think the 37 will do much better. is anyone buying anything from the collection .. I rather like the Richard 3 Angel
  3. I had the same problem with my then collection of copper and bronze back in the day .. prior to slabbing .. I lived in valley where the air was habitually damp and over time reduced my BU coins to not so BU .. we live and learn
  4. The 24% (29% with the juice ) from DNW is either greed or to cover large overheads ... also I suspect there’s more pressure from sellers to get zero commission for selling so the auction house has to squeeze more profit from the buyer ... bad state of affairs
  5. Sellers premium can be fully negotiable whatever is stated in print .. buyers premium is not negotiable , by law I believe ?
  6. They will all follow suit soon I’m sure and jack it up to 24% I tend to agree I’m sure there’s a market for one of them to put their head above the parapet and go 15% .. which is still a good profit especially if they’ve taken it from the other seller side too. Anyone fancy starting an online Auction company ? ! ... actually I would if I was 30 years younger ... actually I would start a revolution if I was 30 years younger...and thinner .. !
  7. Not good for anyone except DNW Buyers will factor in that 30% when they bid so the sellers will get even less..
  8. Ye gods ! What next ..keyrings, fridge magnets ...
  9. Probably make about £40 / 50 profit on eBay .. oops sorry I mentioned that awful word on this site ..
  10. Not really a conflict of interest .. it’s just that the 2 most expensive coin companies have teamed up together .. although personally I always referred to the RM as a marketing company not a coin company. I also have to exclude Westminster, London , Harrington and Byrne and Coincraft who are also on the strong side of pricing but must have a customer base happy to pay as they are still going strong. So who’s to say who’s right or wrong particularly if it ultimately gives pleasure to the buyer?
  11. SR and RM ( who really until this link up are just a marketing company ) are both at the top end of expensive .. so combined it will be doubly expensive ...
  12. Surprisingly for the RM this doesn’t seem too far off the right price .. nice coin. But I agree , the relationship between them and Sovereign rareties doesn’t sit right at all
  13. I'm sure the the 37 Edward VIII and 1808 would do well at Spink , although peronsally if they were mine I would get them slabbed and put them into Heritage....I feel that they would do better in the US with the Investor / Collector type out there ...just my opinion.
  14. I thought he died many years ago ? Nice guy I recall , always had time to talk .. unlike the me-expert-you-dickhead attitude of the Baldwin’s and Seabys of the time. Whilst I’m on that subject I remember Bob Isley always had the time to talk to me at coin fairs even though at the time I had very little money and he was a mega dealer .. Baldwin’s were dreadful in that respect , so high and mighty .. who was the guy who worked for them that always had a crumpled cream suit and resembled a cross between Charles I and Catweazel ?
  15. The thing is that John Minshull was the market maker in Farthings at the time .. and created the whole buzz around them ..much in the same way ( but to a lesser extent ) as Chris Rudd is with Celtic. Also there were so many more Farthing ... and Penny collectors then there are now... with numbers dwindling. I seem to remember that Richard Lobel bought thousands of 1895 farthings or was it 1896 that were found in a vault or a bank somewhere ?
  16. No inside knowledge it’s advertised in their catalogue I got this morning for their Isladulcie Collection of Hammered Gold Coins.. There was a time when I might have had a punt in it but not now !
  17. Speaking of Welsh .. what happened to John Welsh ... ‘Choice BU’ that never was in my experience
  18. Who was Prince Andre D’Guise ? My one and only foray in Ancient Greek gold ..it turned out to be a fougazi .. but got refunded
  19. Exactly .. to the purest collector value is not of primary importance. However at some point it will be
  20. If you held my feet to the flame I would bet my entire penny collection that no one under 20 is reading this .. and if they are then they have have got here by accident via a porn site.
  21. A downturn is a good opportunity to buy certainly for purist collectors who have no concern with future resale values. The reality is that Penny values will never recover in the lifetimes of most Penny collectors including myself. Has anyone in the last 10 years come across a ‘new’ penny collector ? .. we all know who we are and when we’re gone theres no one else really Personally, if static and declining resale values are a concern for you , I would sell and buy Classic Cars, Classic Watches , Gold ...
  22. There has been a softening in the Penny market for some years now...(I exclude the super rareities ..1808 , 1933, 1937 (Ed 8), 1952, 1954) which would probably still attract 'investors' but yer normal pennies have not done that well in recent years ...look at the prices of high grade 1869's 1871's, 1865/3's for example...half what they were at their height and nowhere near where they were even 5 years ago. Unfortunately and this is a personal view that Pennies are going the same way as stamps (perhaps not quite as bad but in the same vein). Most collectors of Pennies and Stamps are in the older age bracket, when they/we die there is no young blood to replace them ....who under 50 - 60 collect stamps or Pennies.. and where are the young collectors?. Go to the York Coin and Stamp fair for example and have a look around the Stamp floor and you will see all the evidence you need. Are any of our children remotely interested in stamps or pennies or coins come to that. Having said that as much as we poo poo these ridiculous coins coming out every day from that well known marketing company , the Royal Mint, these Jemmima Puddleduck, Thomas the Tank Engine and Andy Pandy coins or whatever, are encouraging people to look and collect again and hopefully some will start collecting more historical coins.....just like tea is a gateway drug to biscuits , Jemmima Puddleduck could be a gateway to Pennies ! My view for what its worth.
  23. I've learnt my lesson ...never again ....whether its the fact that in the US they still don't really understand non US coins, particularly varieties, whether its the fact that if its not in Krause they don't understand...or whether they employ visually impaired people ..or whether they grade depending on what mood they are in.. because the inconstancies in grading are enormous and for me at least, not acceptable. Never again.
