Perhaps I'm missing something, but what's the differance between this at £4.5k and an EF one at a tenth of the price. Or is there some desiding feature that the actual Proof of this year has ? I see many described as Prooflike ... thanks

and a far superior 1821 sold as EF by Spinks recently for £700 To me it looks far more " Proof-like " than the £4.5K Coin though its just a currency coin according to Spinks

This was sold by DNW as a Proof , and though the photo is not too good I think this is how a real Proof ought to look. I feel that the £4.5K so called about FDC Proof is not a Proof at all . ( Thats going by the Photo )

Excellent prices, much as I hate slabs , they seem to push prices upwards , and the 99p starts ( for the brave ) also help . I bet fixed prices at a good bit below the realised prices would not have been so successful .

My E.M.C. says .. First Edition 1975 with foreword dated Summer 1974, so seems 1975 was when it appeared. Mine has a loose December 1978 Price List . I had not seen a copy until about 6 months ago and it was being retailed at £6.00 , a bargain !! and a great reference book to have.

Ebay 99p Start can go incredibly high or scary low my guess's are ----but hope they go for more---- 1817 £60 to £80 1821 £80 to £100 1823 £50 to £70

Really sad how Seaby's faded away after 60 or more glorious years, they were wonderful to deal with, but it seems some staff were helping themselves to the stock and running Seabys into the ground . I remember Peter Seaby some years after his father H. A Seaby had died, asking us the keep a look out for some of his high value coins that had gone missing and if we could watch out for , what certain ex members of his staff were putting up for sale at the numerous coin fairs that took place in those early days. I did find out later on how his staff got the numerous coins out , but the rare stuff never turned up as far as I know . I think Seabys did random checks on their staff but the secret of many of the missing items turned out to be " pretend " collectors ( who were actually family members of the staff ) who ordered regularly very cheap coins and lots of rare and valuable ones were slipped into their postal packets ,thus avoiding the random checks. Very sad indeed and I hope the perpetrators got to (not) " enjoy" their ill gotten gains .

Nice you are back " Azda " even though it was only for a few hours. Like most on the Forum we enjoy your posts and the odd " rants " and I think honestly 90 % of the members normally agree with much of what you say. Most of us in the UK enjoy the " feel " of the Coin on our hands and the proper old fashioned UK gradings standards . Nice your absence was only short lived !

I must say, I have been dealing with Spink's since the late 1960's and they were always as good as you get and I used to visit them twice a week and there was no one to beat them. Their web site and search facility was second to none with quality high definition photos that you could blow up to dinner plate size. Their downfall has been dramatic and they are now well amongst the worst there is. Their website and service is lousy, emails are ignored and even when pressed to answer their advice is not to be trusted. I had a Unique Mule recently and I sent them superb photos and asked if it could go into one of their Hong Kong or similar auctions, it took about 8 weeks to get them to say it had NO value at all . I also sent details to Baldwins with good clear photos of a few other Coins asking if they would be suitable for a Hongkong sale, they replied ( but ignored that Coin ) saying a few may have some value but you must bring them ALL in. I got the feeling I would be offered a few pounds for the lot. So I put a photo of that Mule on Ebay and guess what a Russian Dealer offered £3.5K and sent a bank transfer the next day, and another Baldwins ignored completely , I was offered £6K for ! It makes me wonder what the game !!! was. Neither would say they were worth even a penny ! No accusations but some may think it was all a set up for a £10K fraud !! or maybe just complete negligence. I will never deal with either the them again. Very sad after well over 40 years and very many happy dealings with both of them.

The two tiny bubbles on the back are on ALL or MOST Genuine Cromwell Crowns, so would be there if a pressure die was made from a Genuine Coin. So maybe it was Genuine after all , but its strange they would make such a major mistake.

Someone recently asked what would happen to Coins in the usual Plastic Envelopes in a modest fire..eg would the Plastic Coin Envelope completely adhere to the Coin This is what happened after 30 minutes in a cooker wrapped well in kitchen foil The Plastic Coin envelope did peel away from the coin but was totally black and the Coin was blackened as well The Acid Free Paper Coin Envelope (Chris sells these by the 100) was pretty well intact and the Coin looked intact as well I am now thinking that Quality Acid Free Paper Coin Envelopes are a good storage method Any opinions ?

I DID have a 1878 DRITANNIAR Sixpence that was BU Gem and acceptable as such by John Duggan. That was in the 1970's . I've forgotten how much he paid but I drove it 100 plus miles and back to take to to him so it must have been a lot of money even back then .

Lenny was certainly blown up by an IRA Bomb. I never dealt with him, but he always had large adverts in the Coin Mags. I see CHARD Coins Blackpool incorporated R & L Coins , dont know if its the same person from the early days
