It certainly shouts 'Italian' but I'm going 16th century. OK, here's my punt - Venetian, 1560.

Just checked on an 1882 with a H and it is exactly where I think I can see the H on yours.

I think I can see the H as well, that area is quite faded as you can see the bottoms of the numbers are also faded.

Try WHSmiths, most of the change you get there (at least in my local) is fresh from the tube.

It's in the Krause catalogue as 60 USD, which is £38.48 with mintmark A and in VF condition, so you paid about right for it.

Not so sure any mess up with the new steel 5p, 10p will go in their favour though, especially if it causes headaches to the vending machine industry.
The bigger problem that I think that the Royal Mint will face with the new Nickel Plated Steel 5p and 10p coins is getting the plating process right. If they do not, it will not be good for them at all.
As for the Vending Machine Industry, the answer is simple. Do not allow the Vending Machines to accept 5p or 10p Coins.
I know that may sound very blasé, but to me it makes a lot more sense than having to spend a fortune to create new machines that can deal with these new coins and having software written for existing machines to be able to use them.
Instead just have the Software updated in existing machines to not allow 5p or 10p coins.

5 and 10ps are basically useless in the vending machines anyway - they're worthless these days.

Checking my spare change can I found a few 2010 1ps (oddly enough, over half of them had cuds on!) a Gibraltar 20p and a Guernsey 20p and 1981 pound coin AND a 70s half penny...
I could start another collection with the stuff I find in there!

coin is legit, three examlples have been found of this type so far...
i dont suspect there are many of these floating about but who knows.
this is the first to be sold to my knowledge and auction was sarted at 99p.
not a bad result but if only a handfull are found they could be worth something pretty in the future

If no, someone has stolen your pictures and are passing them off as their own!

Chris, are you the ebayer with the legitimate coin or is this ebayer in fact not you, but someone who has taken your photos and added their own with the side of a normal 5p?
Just checked my 5p's and found a 2010 with one side rotated about 30 to 45 degrees. When I hold the coin to the mirror with the reverse "five pence" level, the Queen's head is tilted almost 30 to 45 degrees to the left. It's very noticeable, esp if you hold a normal 5p next to it.
Would that be an error? What would cause this?
I don't have a camera to show it. Matbe try with my phone later.
Die rotation usually causes that sort of error.
I don't know much about mint errors because it's never been that thing and I'm comparatively inexperienced with just 5 to 6 years of collecting - but I've seen a few coins where the die has been rotated (I don't quite know how they manage to do it but they can't exactly check every single one, so some errors get through).

Sounds like they scanned both sides, turned one 180 degrees around (can be done easily on paint!) and posted it.
OR they could have just ripped one from the internet which was like that for aesthetic purposes.
Investigating further I found these coins very easily.
The picture initially looked legit - hard to photoshop!
Enlarging the picture I found it was a normal 5p piece, both sides the right way round!
There was no picture of the coin they were selling!
To be perfectly clear, it's a scam.
Even more cheeky, the OP of this thread seems to be here just so the coin will have been posted on a UK forum, as one of the major selling points on this coin is "this has been on ebay for 30 days prior to this auction, posted across two uk coin forums and also a worldwide forum"!
This type of scam infuriates me every time I go near eBay.

She was North Wales I guess? As a Scouser we were always told that they were the "unfriendly lot" - mind you, putting up with scousers trailing through your country must be a bit irritating!
To be honest there are barely any in Aber these days, if they haven't discovered Ryanair they're in the great city of Borth up the way!
My mam always used to pretend to be a scouse child in Wales, often quoting "Look mam ma eye can see the sea!" or other proclamations of joy when they notice the sheep.

That isn't a bad price. Unless you get a damaged one, most are not in poor condition. A relative lack of circulation means that most examples come up around the VF mark - and are certainly commoner than in fine. So a groat or less likely a threepence starting at around the £200 level is a reasonable amount to pay.
Indeed. I don't really collect hammered coins though, and I'm really after it for historical value, so a damaged one would do me fine, even if it is only worth it's melting value.

Funnily enough, both my granny and my mum used to say that. It made a pair with the rainy day "Look - enough blue [in the sky] to mend a Dutchman's trousers"
My family variation on that was 'enough blue to make a sailor a pair of trousers'.
Yes, we were told the sailor variant also - except it was 'mend' in both cases, not 'make' (perhaps it was a smaller patch of blue sky?
)My mother always said "It's going to be sunny if there's enough sky to make an Englishman's trousers" followed by "Bloody Englishmen".
This was all in Welsh of course.

Welcome to the forum, that is some quantity of coins you have, do you collect certain Countries/dates, or is it a world type set?
It's a bit of a muddle really... I started off wanting to collect silver threepences 1845-1937 but after buying the local coin place's stock of about 11 of them and 2 in a handful of car boot sales I decided to branch out until I found myself collecting pennies from 1797 to 1967 (originally I collected from 1800 but I couldn't resist buying a cartwheel penny and twopence going cheap!), 20th century Halfpennies, farthings from 1820s-, and an aim of a handful of coins from every country in the world... and anything that I know is worth a bit more than what they're selling it for!

Hello all!
For a while I've browsed across the forum and site for information and a read but only recently I've made an account and started posting.
I come from sunny Wales and spend too many evenings collecting, storing and entering into my database a multitude of world coins (currently I have one thousand one hundred and forty-six)
Last year I acquired a metal detector with visions of digging up giant hordes of coins from the ground of the 700 odd year old town in which I reside but alas after days of detecting I found 2 rusty 2ps and a dozen beer cans.
I've searched for coins in antiques markets in shops in Nice, Monaco, Villefranche, Italy and exotic Swansea and have built up my collection for around 6 years (a complete newbie to some of you with half a century collecting under your belts!).
Sorry about waffling on and I hope to speak to you all soon!

I'd still buy one if it was going for around £30, even though I only have real interest in non-error coins of the 18th, 19th and 20th century.
The London Mint will buy them for £100 a piece but they will just cover them with enamel and sell them for much much more.
