One I didn't have either. I still look out for the 1887 pattern shilling by Bohem. The only one I know is in the Royal Mint Museum.

Interesting. I had never come across other thin flan 3ds. I have a very thin 1944 3d. The normal 3d is 2.69-2.72mm with a vernier caliper. The thin 3d is 2.14-2.16mm.How thin is the 1956?

Sovereign Rarities have spare catalogues post sale. Ask Steve Hill. It seems the Australian copies still have not arrived. I have advised him. You might look at the rare Melbourne and Sydney sovs and half sovs. several did not sell. I might have to change my profile picture now I have sold the coin.

I should add there is a very rare florin with 4 bands to the crown and an IEB proof in the exceptional silver set. There are of course the 7 and 8 pearl crowns represented.

I wonder if the sale will include the "proof florin with a wide gap below the truncation"? Bull and other cataloguers imply wrongly that this is the "normal" proof, but in fact nearly all the 1887 proof florins have the later obverse with a narrow gap.
You are correct the proof in the sets has the bust close to the rim. The many currency dies are wider from the rim. The hooked J variety has as many as 25+ different dies but I have not written them up yet. The majority are being gifted to The Royal Mint but some of the best are in the auction. Mainly ex Peter Davies. Of course the IEB is in the sale as well. Some of the finest could easily be taken for proof but Sovereign Rarities are very particular to not overstate any of the coins. At least everyone can make up their own mind. My 1887 "Proof " penny and halfpenny did not pass muster though they were bought as proof and have mirror finish. They were graded MS 64. The silver is possible to find in wonderful proof like finish so it rather depends if you are a buyer or a seller how you grade it. I believe I had a hooked J proof.

Nerd indeed! You are paying for the beer Rob. I must admit talking about the die varieties of the 1887 sixpence has often put grandchildren to sleep. There are many unique pieces in the collection including varieties of the 14 pearl sovereign, some patterns by Lauer, and J R Thomas. Plenty of proof varieties that just are not listed anywhere and so many crowns with different rim sizes. OK I will accept slightly off the spectrum but that is what research is all about. This one is unlisted

I understood that unpublished research could be posted on the forum but have lost how to do it or how to access other peoples posts. I am nearing the end of my research days and would like to make information available. How do I do it?

I have seen this on coins in my collection that have been in cases with particular foam in the lining and also on a silver tea pot that was exposed to sulfurous coal fires.

46 is the only one known to me. Even the "proof" has 46. I have seen the Royal Mint collection but don't recall one there either.

I have noticed the pips on the radio, the time on my phone and the clock on ebay are all different. The computer is about 3 seconds behind and I put this down to some electronic lag. I think ebay allows several pre electronically generated bids to unravel after the final time. You can check by looking at the bids button to see what time each bid was made.

What 1887 penny was it? I had a look on their site and could only see a June auction.

Bought one lot for stock, but nothing for the collection. I wanted one of 3 Wiener shillings, but I'm not paying £7-15K for one. £3K maybe for a nice one. Equally, not paying £3K for the pattern decimal penny.
No prizes for guessing which 1887 penny I got driven up to buy. But at least I know its pedigree right back to Murdock and it is after all unique.

Conversations like this take me back 50+ years to phrases like "invitation to treat" "offer and acceptance" "fundamental terms and mere warranties"
The goods on ebay only invite an invitation to treat (make an offer). Who remembers The Boots Cash Chemists case or
Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co
If your money is not accepted there is no contract. On the other hand Sale of Goods Act is also in force so ask someone a lot younger.

You could try
H.W. Wood Limited
The Baltic Exchange, 38 St Mary Axe, London EC3A 8BH
Phone: +44 (0)20 7398 9000 ext 2105
Direct Dial: +44 (0)20 3697 2105Good as you don't have to identify "valuables" or say what is gold silver or other. No photos needed but obviously if you need any claim it is good to have all details.
If you use them I could do with a commission.

And what about the Gothic Crowns? A$84000+ commission = £58,000 phew.
I was happy to get three lots including one piece, I believe unique, from the collection.

It looks like it has been stored in one of the early cases with foam lining. The gasses given off produce the horrible uneven toning.
