I now use a totally free web hosting option (Wordpress) to store my coin pics (see link below) ... 3 gb upload limit

All I need to do to post pics in here is to right-click on the image in Wordpress, select Copy Image, then Ctrl+V into here

I have 20.4gb stored on photobucket.

Seems a bit below the belt that this applies to stuff already on there, posted under the terms previously offered.

Sounds like sharp practice to me. Is it legal?

It amounts to the old "If I'd known you were going to do that, I'd never have bothered with you in the first place"

A USA company Mike so Trump rules apply (they can do what they want when they want)

I saw that those changes to PhotoBucket were coming and deleted my account.  There are plenty of free image hosting sites around, but how long will any of them survive?

Sadly with over 5000 images attached to on sale items I am tied to them......

  4. Just when you think things can't get any tougher as a dealer......

I attempted to list a few items for auction on ebay last night. Ebay have recently moved the goalposts re charges, use of Turbo Lister etc and are becoming a real pain to deal on. I use photofuckit for my pictures on all websites (this one included) and was astounded to see a message pop up on my ebay listings rather than my pictures. The message told me that I could no longer use photofuckit for hosting on 3rd party sites unless I upgraded to their 500 plan. With over 2900 items on ebay this left me somewhat in the brown smelly stuff. My only option was to hope they greased me up as I bent over the barrel for them and I ended up shelling out the eye watering sum of £301 to upgrade for the year, yes, £301 or $389.99 to be more accurate.......

Ebay are tightening up on off site deals now as well and they are removing all contact info or listings that it appears on. What's the answer? Go back to a website that costs £30/month but generates little trade or keep letting 3rd parties brutalise you?

Hmmm...so I've just had my invoice e mailed from PFK, and the total cost was £508.00.

According to the e mail reply regarding the enquiry I sent a few days ago, and shown upthread, the hammer price of £400.00 would incur an additional charge of 20.4%. Therefore, £400.00 + 20.4% = £481.60. So I'm thinking, hang on a minute, unless there's something I've not been told, the figure supplied is mathematically incorrect, since postage and packing for a single coin by tracked next day delivery, aint going to be £26.40 (the difference between £481.60 and £508.00)

I rang PFK on the number supplied and the guy I spoke to said there was indeed an additional £20.00 charge for dealing online, which of course, wasn't previously explained. Never mind.

Hidden charges eh? You've got to watch these people like a bloody hawk.

It's usual for salerooms to add a 3% surcharge for using the saleroom.com (Hansons actually charge 5%) as there is a substantial outlay to be paid by the auction house to Saleroom.com. That would add £12 to the total and I suppose if they are cgharging £14 for SD postage that's a damn sight cheaper than using Mailboxes.com. If the 3% tinternet fee was already included I don't have a clue where the additional fees come from.

For us lazy slobs, can you post or PM me what the remainder half crowns are?

I'm even lazier so here's the auction link

    https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/penrith-farmers-and-kidds-plc/catalogue-id-srpen10047

    The coins started at lot 275 and the only halfcrowns to sell were lot numbers 303 (1671 1/1), 352 (1703 Vigo), 366 (1746/5 Lima), 368 (1817 D/T in DEI), 369 (1817 small head), 370 (1820 GIII in UNC) and 381 (1906).

Sorry, didn't mean to criticise you - I thought that the auction house wrote the descriptions !

    P.S. what's a Glock 17 ?

No problem Richard, you couldn't make me feel any worse than I already do if you dressed me in a pink chiffon tutu and called me Herbert....

A Glock 17 is a sweet little 9mm self loading pistol manufactured in Austria by Glock. 17 is the mag capacity, but I feel like I only need 1 at the moment

Because they were sold in halfcrown and penny blocks,  they didn't include the words "halfcrown" or "penny" in the individual descriptions and so they won't have turned up in any searches for those words. Not very clever marketing !!!!

Ah, just goes to show that I should have stuck to driving ARV's around Cumbria rather than writing catalogues for internet auctions eh Richard? Compooters and tinterweb leave me baffled at the best of times, give me a nice Glock 17 or H&K G36 and I'm happy

Enjoy the Glen Livet, John !

Come October, when I've got a bit more cash, I'd be interested in the F21, if you've still got it by then.

    I will thanks Mike.

My next step is another sale (probably Tennants if I can negotiate a 0% rate with Rodney, Jane or Jeremy). Perhaps I may return them to LCA with a free hand for them and take a massive hit.

I will remove the F21 and hold it for you until you are ready to take it Mike.

Still pretty bad I'm afraid, John - although I bid on the one that interested me, namely the Freeman 69, and won for £400 hammer. I wasn't the only bidder either, as the auctioneer started at £320.

Whilst I'm aware there is a GEF example out there somewhere, yours, at GVF and problem free, is the best I've encountered in many years of looking and seeing nothing better than barely fine, or slightly better and damaged in some way. It'll certainly be an excellent replacement for my current one, which is fine, but was polished at some point.

They're onto the paintings now, so I've logged out.

Aye I was watching live too Mike. Some may think that the asking prices were too high and if that's the case all of our collections are worth half of what they cost. There seemed absolutely NO INTEREST and that was highlighted by the last lot in my section. 1.7Kg net of silver only attracted a bid of £420. There is currently £705+ in scrap value in that lot.....

Pleased you got what you were after and I know it'll be looked after by you.

Anyhoo I have an appt with a 12yr old called Glen Livet, I can safely say the little sod won't live to see 13......

Been watching the auction live, still on the halfcrowns, up to and including lot 351 - multiple passes I'm afraid to say. Although the very expensive £8k one went.

The 1667 didn't sell Mike. Nothing has sold thus far. Some of the asking prices were insanely low and he couldn't get a single bid which leads me to believe that either the Halfcrown market is as dead as a dead thing in D

eadsville or they failed to advertise the sale properly (my saleroom search for coins this week only threw up 6 of the PFK lots).

If the Penny section does the same I may well need a bottle of Glenlivet to ease the pain tonight......

I don't know what has happened to it since I saw it and can only go on what I'm told. Maybe it has been looked at and condemned and maybe not. The person concerned wasn't short of a bob or two, nor do they collect anything in depth, so it would fit into a random selection quite easily. Maybe they kept it and wanted to stay below the radar. Maybe they sold it. Who knows?

We all know there are many things that specialist collectors would like to know exist, but the knowledge is kept close to the owner's chest for whatever reason.

I don't, though this is not restricted to the person above. It's the incessant listing of (badly or deliberately misdescribed) crap on eBay that has killed off the fun. 12 or 14 years ago the British coins listed ran to about 3000 items at most. When I last looked it was well into 6 figures, most of which were 'very rare' coins from change struck in the last year or two, or washers that were hard to identify.

eBay could do the world a great service by charging an up front fee with no charge for relisting and no final value fee. It would kill off much of the speculative s***e

It would also kill of the massive profits that the robbing barstewards make, a bit like Turkeys voting for Christmas.

I don't even search on there now and was a little peeved to find a very rare 3d had sold via auction 4 weeks ago for less than £60. My own stupid fault but the plethora of pish puts me off searching!

My latest Cinque Port (pronounced Sink Port apparently) Conder token, just Hastings needed to complete the main 5, arriving later this week but not as high a grade ...

    1794_hp_kent_hythe_conder_token_sloop_dh

Question for other Conder token collectors on here - I use the following sellers to source my tokens, any others I should be looking at?

    • ABC coins and tokens (David Stuart)
    • Baldwins (of St James)
    • John Newman (johnnyqc on eBay)
    • Druids Revenge (eBay Seller)

I always have a good few ont Bay Paul. Some very scarce, some high grade and some run o't Mill.

  15. It has to be the red dye on the insert to blame for the 73 coins. To find a mint set is very difficult whereas most 1970 sets are as issued. Bizarre and slightly annoying!
