Morning all. I'm just having a look at Baldwins (now The Strand) auction fees as I'm looking to put up a coin that I recently got. Reading their terms, it looks like their vendor's fee is the same as the buyer's fee at 20% plus VAT. Is this normal? It seems excessively high to me, as they'll be making around 48% in total for any lot they sell. Or is this just the way of the world right now?

Baffles me when I see this type of thing on ebay. I saw one listing the other day where the bloke's fingers looked like he'd been doing an oil change on his lawnmower. Can't remember what the coin was, but I do know it was silver, so Christ knows what that'll turn up like.

Morning, Seeing as I've put my back out and can't work, I'm going through some coins trying to get to grips with the 1860 - 1861 bronze pennies and halfpennies. The wordpress links that someone very kindly gave me have been really useful. I just wanted to check this coin out to make sure I'm in the right ball park as it seems to be a hell of a lot of die parings with these. I'm fairly confident in it being Reverse G, but would I be right with Obverse 6? Does this make it an F277? I may be completely wrong, so any help would be most welcome. Cheers.

Indeed. It was only when you mentioned the different F number that I looked and remembered they had it as F118. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of difference between the two, but then my eyes aren't what they used to be. To be honest, there were quite a few that I was after, but bank balance dictated where I went. I did manage to pick up the 1880 farthing as well though. All being said, I thought it was quite a reasonable sale actually.

This is the one I was after at the Baldwins auction if I didn't get the Sixpence. Lovely specimen.

I believe gold is treated differently, as I asked the same question to the auction house when I was bidding on something over there. They have a branch here in the UK, and this was their reply: "...There is also an import duty of 5% on coins that are not bullion. If they are bullion, there is no import applicable." That said, maybe it's because they have a branch here that they are able to do this by getting the coins shipped office to office. I wouldn't like to categorically say no. Sorry if that's vague.

Evening all, Just browsing through some upcoming auctions and having a look at some interesting coins. However, I've just been looking at the buyers fees for a particular auction, and it's 24% PLUS VAT, making it nearly 30%! That sounds exorbitant to me, seeing as they also seem to be charging a consignors fee of 15% as well. I know London Coins charges around 17% and Baldwins was 20% + VAT, so what's the average BP these days? Around 20% plus vat? Cheers

Thanks for confirming that. I think that a near 30% add-on is excessive and as you say, I'd *really* want the coin to justify parting with that kind of excess. All seems a bit much really.

Are you doing this on the app, or on the desktop?

Lack of experience on my part, perhaps a little wet behind the ears about something looking quite sharp but not looking at other factors. Trawling through the pages of interweb as I do, I do a bit of digging when provenance is mentioned. There's a coin up for sale I looked at recently and details of the previous coins auction history etc, but comparing the pics, it looks like some of the deposits/marks have been removed subsequently. May be the light, but it put me off. I need to get out and handle more coins, broaden the eye.

This is all very interesting. I'd seen something bandied around about toning coins on one of the other forums, but thought it related to silver coins rather than copper/bronze. Looking at that 1975H, I'd have a job spotting the difference between natural toning and artificial from the pics, but may have a better idea in hand. Something else to watch out for. Every day's a school day. 👍

Afternoon all, Quick question please. Looking through the Spink at the listings of George IV farthings, and it seems there's an "1822 -inv. A's legend." I've looked online and can't seem to find any reference to this, so any ideas please? I've had a look in Peck and can't see anything, and as the Freeman doesn't go back that early, any pointers gratefully received. Ta.

It set me on Columbo mode and trawled through god knows how many pages of the interweb looking for it. Funnily enough, I did find mention of it briefly on a page somewhere in the universe but like an idiot I didn't favourite the page to have a proper look at. Maybe you're right, maybe Spink have got it wrong, seeing as Peck doesn't seem to mention it (unless I skimmed it).

Unfortunately not, no. I'm trying to work out where an inverted A would fit into the legend. I assume it would be the U in GEORGIUS?

Good morning all, Happy new year to you. I'm new to the forum after lurking around the interweb for a bit, doing a bit of research. I'm a newcomer to the hobby after falling down a youtube rabbit hole, and got hooked on the whole historical side of things. I've always had an interest in English and British history, and hadn't fully appreciated the links that coins had to the rich history of the homeland. That combined with an addictive personality and a relentless attitude for hunting things down was only ever going to go one way. I'm really a copper and bronze man, with the odd bit of silver and gold added for good measure. I'm particularly interested in the late Georgian period, through into Victoria, but the Tudor reign certainly holds my attention. From my previous looking around the site, this looks like a place with a lot of expert opinion, and I'm looking forward to making your acquaintance. Regards, Kip.
