  1. I've been caught out a couple of times before, but I'm hopeful that this one is the real deal. 1911. Ab.

I may be wrong but I think MrT is able to contact him, judging by a response from him on page 8 of this thread. Edited to add that I've just messaged MrT, so we may know shortly. Mr Dracott's views would certainly be a great help in identifying the major differences.

.....until someone ignores the book and finds one with a different pairing.... Mal lewendon 13# as an example. Interestingly, Dracott lists an 1879 with thicker legends. 3 known.
  5. Nothing wrong with those photos.

    Using acetone to clean coins

Joking aside, builders merchants sell pure acetone. Probably more sensibly priced than other outlets.

Galvanized nails are far superior. No cleaning required.
  8. When selling on eBay..... " Extremely rare coin. I've only got 2 " 😂

I'd say an 8 on this one, as I can only see 2 single berries below the 2nd group of leaves whereas on a 9, there is a double and a single. But agreed, a clearer photo would help.

Must admit, I was relieved to see that the envelope contained the coin that I purchased.

Thanks Martin. His re-listing was partly my fault. He first started at £20. I bid. He then cancelled auction and re-listed at £40. I bid. Asked him if he had a price in mind and offered £70 and we settled on £80 but as my bid had cancelled the best offer, he had to relist to bring the best offer option back into play. A bit long winded but another number in hand.

After my mistaken identification of the 8+J above, I decided to check my other two that I had down as reverse K. Turns out that I have both an 8 and a 9, reverse I. So F313, F314, F315 crossed off in quick succession. A further search on eBay, turned up this one, which arrived this morning. Reverse K. ? Paired with 9. F317.

Thanks Martin. It was an impulse buy on Saturday. Probably paid too much for it. £71. Initially thought a K but on posting here, realised that it was maybe a J. Hence the additional text. Thank you for confirmation. Another one off the list though. To many people, the condition would be a problem, especially the scar across the bust, but for me it shows that the coin was used as intended, with a history and a life. A survivor, if you like, rather than fresh from the press. Floats my boat. F314 8+J. R16. I'm happy.

Could someone confirm or deny reverse K please? Flat rim and no windows to lighthouse. Or maybe reverse J

Yes, it did arrive eventually, after a great deal of pleading and a phone call to Canada. Unfortunately, I don't have the means to take, up close, detailed photos of both numbers and it would be unfair to ask Ian again. Wish I knew someone else, who could undertake such a task? Maybe similar to others that have appeared on this thread. Perchance. 😁

The same coin, as the scar by her arm proves. I did check when it arrived. My photo shows the coin in the condition that I received it, so it has had a good wipe before it was sent. Thank you for your concerns though.
