Oh dear, I'm somewhat embarrassed, I now realise that I did not read the description properly, just the title. These pesky small screens do my eyes in!!
-
This has a dodgy description despite the buy it now price: https://www.ebay.com/itm/163873577855?_trksid=p11021.c100851.m5053&_trkparms=aid%3D1110001%26algo%3DSPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20170803121420%26meid%3Db09f8d900b6b4b43bfef4524840bf9c6%26pid%3D100851%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26b%3D1%26sd%3D293246605923%26itm%3D163873577855%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D11021&ul_noapp=true

Hear, hear!

While I totally condemn the seller, I also have absolutely no sympathy for the idiot who paid a 'monkey' for a 'Ricky Lake' - all the signs were there - what a prat!
-
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173902880500?ul_noapp=true What a load of bs in this seller's description! Of course he knows it's a fake! Frank
-
https://www.ebay.com/itm/303147474271?ul_noapp=true This in my view is an appalling example of coin-grading and a classic illustration of why a grading-system designed for milled coins cannot be fairly-applied to hammered coins with any wear on them, not to mention clipping! Furthermore, even applying US criteria for milled coins, AU55 should be for a coin showing full detail with light wear and a significant amount of remaining lustre, I cannot see how NGC evaluated this at such a grading. Where are they coming from?? Frank
-
Me too (again)!

I think what you are saying is that fingerprints are just the beginning of the process of patination and from a single fingerprint which (although unsightly) does demonstrate just minimal chemical interference with the coins surface. General handling will then, over time, apply considerable amounts of hand 'contamination' containing a spectrum of chemicals - oily, acidic, alkaline and so on, that will cause the original unsightliness to merge into a general patina that is pleasing to the eye. Yes I agree, but the results of handling are also combining with all of the other effects that a coin will be subjected to such as atmospheric conditions, wetness, dryness, heat, cold and amount of physical wear etc., until the coin is "rescued" from these combined effects when it becomes part of a collection and (unless it is slabbed) will then only be predominantly affected by atmosphere with the other influences minimised. Such is the 'life of a coin'. Wooden artefacts are similar, probably more so, since years of handling enhance their attractiveness. Frank
-
Amazing that it made £187. Some poor s*d will be kicking himself! Mind you, because of the reproduced wear it's quite convincing if you don't look too closely. Frank
-
Look at this beauty - don't all rush to buy it! https://www.ebay.com/itm/113651333826?ul_noapp=true He's also got his "CAROLVS" mixed up with his "IACOBVS" (probably deliberately). Frank
-
Rob, Thanks for that. It shows (as often) that we all have a lot to learn! I must message the guy and admit that I 'jumped the gun' somewhat, although the conversation did remain civil and I was just asking what numismatic reference gives details of this variety. It seem there is none. Frank
-
I've messaged the seller asking what numismatic reference provided the info being claimed. It'll be interesting what the response is. Frank
-
My 'bone of contention' is the description! In my view they can ask what they want and if anyone is stupid enough to buy, then that's their problem. However, when descriptions such as extremely rare are banded around dubious bullsh*t about the mintmark and rarity of the date being on the reverse, these are blatant attempts to deceive and clearly fraudulent. I'll give it one thing though, the coin is quite reasonable and notwithstanding the Spink value, I certainly reckon a fair price would be £300. Frank
-
https://www.ebay.com/itm/273685950126?ul_noapp=true Is this description an exaggeration? N2236, S2807, is scarce at most. Or have I missed something? Frank
-
Thanks for the feedback - yes, on reflection I agree it's wise to steer clear of these. Frank
-
Can anyone answer this for me, I'm looking at a current eBay auction and specifically at the bid history - in this case, each bid (including the current one) is described as 'private listing' whereas normally one sees a list with a few letters and asterisks denoting different bidders. I've never seen that before, can anyone explain. Frank
-
This seller is spewing out this rubbish as can be seen by all of his other items! People are still 'drawn-in' despite the buy-it-now prices - take a look at the buyer feedback. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jubilee-Bust-Double-Florin-Roman-I-VICTORIA-DEI-GRATIA-Four-Crowned-Shields/264060685003?hash=item3d7b3e4acb:m:mtnUUZX7U-b6ET3Id_c1UXg:rk:1:pf:0 What I don't understand is how eBay can post a statement saying "100 per cent buyer satisfaction" with a score of 99.4 positive feedback and a pile of negative comments. Frank
-
They most certainly are judging by the number of bids! Frank

This toe-rag is back: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Scarborough-Silver-Siege-Piece-Coin-Hammered-Metal-Detecting-medieval-saxon-/183594648280?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10
-
Yes, I thought that - looks like they've been constructed to deceive.
-
Quite amazing!! This guy's other non-numismatic MD finds are all strangely similar.... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silver-Viking-Freya-Pendant-metal-Detecting-Saxon-Hammered/183585358778?hash=item2abe8a43ba:g:pHsAAOSwI9FcE5-~:rk:1:pf:0 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Early-Viking-Silver-Pendant-800ad-Metal-Detecting-Find/153299655991?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20170920101022%26meid%3Df134fcaaa3704c43a0bb5a494b460175%26pid%3D100010%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D3%26sd%3D183585358778%26itm%3D153299655991&_trksid=p2047675.c100010.m2109 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silver-Thors-Hammer-Pendant-Metal-Detecting-Find-Medieval-Saxon-Gold-Hammered/183581897832?_trkparms=aid%3D444000%26algo%3DSOI.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20170221122447%26meid%3D8686fc1e236c4461a3eda337382a8a26%26pid%3D100752%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D183585358778%26itm%3D183581897832&_trksid=p2047675.c100752.m1982 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hawking-Ring-Verval-Silver-Good-Condition-Detecting-Find-medieval-Hammered-Saxon/183576189927?_trkparms=aid%3D444000%26algo%3DSOI.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20170221122447%26meid%3D8a54b32d8c68474598cb7cde1e5db6dc%26pid%3D100752%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D183581897832%26itm%3D183576189927&_trksid=p2047675.c100752.m1982 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silver-Hawking-Ring-Metal-Detecting-Verval-Medieval-Hammered/183585593199?_trkparms=aid%3D444000%26algo%3DSOI.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20170221122447%26meid%3Df14b7e9251264d19b40c416148f95146%26pid%3D100752%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D183581897832%26itm%3D183585593199&_trksid=p2047675.c100752.m1982 Not a very subtle forger! I've reported each individually and await with baited breath to see if Ebay have the gumption to pull them.

Looks like this one's gone a bit mad with the gold spray - I've never seen so much lustre before on a worn penny! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/183576226751?ul_noapp=true Well it is Christmas, I suppose! Frank
-
That is a nice strong portrait Paddy, usually they are quite weak, I think. Frank
-
I see he sold it for 4.99! Frank
-
It's been pulled. Well done guys! Frank
