I know you people are all coin people, and so am I!

As most of you will know, I had the daunting task of making a few books new and improved. I did the CCGB2005 and the "Roman Base Metal Coins - A Price Guide" myself, and I'm lucky enough to have found someone to re-new the established "Collectors' Coins Ireland". I also have a very nice man working on "Roman Silver Coins - A Price Guide" and 3 other people working on brand new books. The George III coin book was not top priority....

But, the banknote book was top priorty, and I have not been unable to get anyone to do it for me! I had someone interested, but they wanted to publish it themselves too, and we can't have that can we. Other banknote experts were too busy, and/or working on books of there own.

So, I'm doing it myself, and I can say that it is quite a learning curve. I've purchased a couple of good banknote reference books and I'm in the process of creating "Collectors' Bank notes 2006" (that title will probably remain unchanged) right now. I'll still need help with the price gathering, perhaps I'll ask you lot to help out with that.

For anyone that wants to see, this is a link to the first 20 pages:

http://www.rotographic.co.uk/books/BankNotes2006.pdf

There are a few gaps here and there, mainly concerning missing pictures and the contents page. The images are all low resolution and compressed in this sample, to make it an easy size to download. The printed version and final download versions will of course be sharper.

What do you think? I'm actually starting to get in to banknotes a bit as I'm doing this! By the way, all the images so far are of notes that belong to me....I had to buy a whole collection so that I could make good enough scans of the notes. There will probably be a banknote section appearing on predecimal.com when the book is done, to sell the notes through (if I don't keep them!)

I thought this would be a nice job for a lazy Boxing Day but it's turned into a bit of a headache. I'm trying to match up the Die classification for 1861 Halfpennies used by Freeman and Peck. I do have both books, so I didn't think it would be too hard. Trouble is, both authors seem to use completely different identifiers. I don't have enough of the actual coins to do it that way, so I'm having to go by their descriptions.

This is as far as I have got:

Freeman:

Obv 3 -

Obv 4 - Peck Obv 3

Obv 5 - Peck Obv 4

Obv 6 -

Obv 7 - Peck Obv 5

Peck:

Obv 2* -

Freeman:

Rev D -

Rev E - Peck Rev C*

Rev F -

Rev G -

Peck:

Rev E -

Rev F -

I can't believe I'm the first person to ever try this. Has anyone got any further and can help me fill those blanks?

Sorry to be so autistic, but it's a big messy area in my database!

Hi Chris,

This question is a bit of a cheek, but I hope you won't mind sharing some information with me.

I'm currently in the early stages of producing a book on 20th century coins and I need to refer to many of the 'standard references' such as Davies, Peck, Freeman etc. My concern is about what permissions I need in order to quote information from these sources. What I have in mind is say Freeman or Peck numbers, rather than actual quotes from the text of the books. In your Rotographic series, for instance in Collectors Coins GB 2007, you use Freeman and ESC numbers to identify the coins, and I wonder if you needed to approach the publishers for permission to use them. It may be that this isn't necessary and if so I would be pleased to know as I wouldn't have to worry about this aspect of the task.

I hasten to add that my 'book' will cover an entirely different area of coins than yours so there would be no direct commercial overlap. In other words, you needn't worry that you would be helping a rival!!

Thanks in hope

DaveG38

Help, I'm confused dot com! My latest version of CCGB is 2007 (I buy one every few years) and I have been checking out the details of the 1911 shilling. According to Davies, there are 3 obverse and 1 reverse for this year giving 1+A, 2+A and 3+A types. According to CCGB2007 (and earlier issues e.g. 1998 and 1990) the 1911 shilling comes as 2 obverse and 2 reverses all fully meshed to give 1+A, 1+B, 2+A and 2+B. However, the differentiator for the reverses is the pointing of the 'I' in 'GEORGIVS.' The problem is that this inscription appears on the obverse NOT the reverse, so my questions are:

1) Are there 4 obverses based on the combinations of hollow/flat neck and 'I' to a bead/space or just the 3 reported by Davies? If Davies, the non-existent one is the flat neck with 'I' to a space combination. Anybody got one?

2) Are there any reverse die types other than A that anybody knows about? If so what are they paired with?

3) Is this error put right in later CCGBs?

DaveG38

On page 72 of CYC there is an Info panel on how to calculate the value of modern proof sets (basically, a multiplier of the total face value). I'd just like to add the following notes :

1. The first three sets 1971/2/3 attract a variable premium - 1971 through being the first decimal proofs, 1972 through being a 'proof only' year set, 1973 through being very difficult to obtain without ugly toning so untoned sets attract a premium

2. Coins that weren't issued in currency form (e.g. 1974 2p 5p 50p) are worth around double the proofs that were. They tend not to add to the value of the whole set but have more value as singletons, which is why so many early sets are broken up on the principle that 'the whole is worth less than the sum of the parts'.
