It suddenly occurred to me the other day I had put a bid in for a nice looking penny on eBay. I had to put the bid in early as I had a long drive when it was due to mature. By the time I got home the auction was over. Now here is my conundrum. I could check with the web site to see if I had been successful or not. But if I did I might have failed in my bid and had lost the coin. However, if I don’t check it out I could still hold the winning bid, but I won’t know until I looked at the listing. Therefor, I might have won that coin, or not, until I find out one way or the other. I( I have lost the bid then I would be disappointed, so am I in a better position by not looking? Unless I have won it.

Two half crowns I have collected over the years. Both have good obverses with the King's ear intact. The reverse however shows wear/poor strike on the to the top of the shield lions and Scottish lion. An opinion on this wear as against poor strike would be welcome. Again an opinion on the grade of these coins would be appreciated

	Hi there,

I am new to this forum.

Im enquiring on behalf of my step father whom has a collection of limited edition proof pure gold coins of significant value, he is now well into retirement and would like to sell these coins in order to free up some capital In order to make the most of his retirement.

He had a company come to value the coins however would only offer him the spot price for the weight of the gold (around 15,000 pounds), however we believe them to be worth considerably more as they are limited edition in perfect condition and never been touched and we have all the boxes and authenticity paperwork still.

The List of the coins are as follows,

over the year Ive been sifting through my coins and put Colonial Coins in another bag to sort out at a later date and create some organisation ....

I have checked and found that most are .925 silver so at the very least scrap....

However...some of these seem to be quite scarce...

	The 1887 Canada, 10 cents, Mintage 350 000

The 1891 British Guiana and West Indies, Fourpence, Mintage 336 000

The 1918 Australia, Threepence, Mintage 3 119 000...... ok so not a rarity...

the Victorian Colonial coins of this lot are the scarcer and as the page of the ones I own is growing its a becoming real eye opener...👍

2nd find today whilst sifting through the hoard ...... worth mentioning that on closure inspection whilst magnifying the photo it looked like it was a attempted hole being drilled.....but then looking again I think this has been a die fault issue....I have other Colonial issue coins with faults

I enjoy having huge silver coins in my pocket so I added a new one to my “pocket coins” today: a 1971 S proof Eisenhower 40% silver one dollar. It looks fun alongside my 1935 Peace Dollar and 1935 Rocking Horse Crown from the UK.

My son was “Oooh! Shiny!” and, yeah, proof coins are cool that way. To protect them I do keep them in encapsulated so that they don’t get scruffed and dinged in my pocket like other circulation coins.

I had an empty row at the bottom of the last page of my shillings, after the 1970 proof coins. So I decided it would be fun to put together some similar sized and valued coins (in terms of buying power then) from earlier in the 20th century. Plus the 5 pence proof from 1990 is in silver as well because that was the last year they were made the same size as the classic shilling and the shilling was finally being demonitized 20 years after decimal day.

	The other coins are:

	1930 US Standing Liberty Quarter
1917 French 1 Franc
1930 Irish 1 Shilling
1917 Italian 1 Lira
1909 Imperial Germany 1 Mark

It’s an interesting comparison of economies that the franc, mark & lira are all a single unit of their basic currency, the US is one fourth of a dollar and the shilling was one twentieth of a pound sterling. Though their economy was weaker, Ireland at that time pegged the Punt to the Pound. The US was far stronger than all of mainland Europe but the UK ruled over all until WWI shattered everyone but the US.

I had these coin folders for most of my collection that I didn't trust the plastic in. So I bought new binder and some better sheets like I've been using for my shilling run and transferred everything over today. While moving the Elizabeth II sets - both l/s/d & decimal - I noticed something that struck me as interesting.

Back when the UK changed to decimal, the new 5p & 10p were made the size and weight of the shilling and florin respectively. That ended in 1990 and then over the next couple of years the 5p, 10p, and 50p were made physically smaller.

Also in there though the £1 coins and the £2 coins were introduced. The bi-metal £1 is essentially the same diameter and just a bit heavier than a shilling was. The bi-metal £2 coin is almost exactly the size and weight of the florin. I looked at the value of the 1966 shilling at the Bank of England's inflation calculator and even more humorously, the shillings buying power then was £0.82 in December of 2025 - a florin equaling £1.74 now. Not too far off from £1 & £2 pound coins!

Perhaps the UK should introduce a circulating £5 coin of 32.5mm and 14.14 grams... ? 🤣

I'm not a modern coin collector...I use to keep an eye out for the undated 20p's and during the Olympics 50p's were circulating I sold them as I found them and made a good return on them.....and saw them reduce in price as time moved on....However today The 2025 King Charles III Bees £1 coin was in my small change....now its claimed to be currently the rarest circulating uk £1 coin, with only 170,000 entering circulation.......Is this true or just hype ? I see them on ebay for silly money but not wanting to get caught up with this game....
