    Thanks for the positive response. I will just start with a few pictures as I am not sure how to post images on this forum. First a 1991H Penny: <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9560_zpszqjepdpn.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9560_zpszqjepdpn.jpg" border="0" alt="1882 H Penny Obverse photo IMG_9560_zpszqjepdpn.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9559_zpsvksuh4r1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9559_zpsvksuh4r1.jpg" border="0" alt="1882 H Penny reverse photo IMG_9559_zpsvksuh4r1.jpg"/></a> An 1817 shilling <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9579_zpswdfmnlme.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9579_zpswdfmnlme.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9579_zpswdfmnlme.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9580_zpsddkjk7vg.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9580_zpsddkjk7vg.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9580_zpsddkjk7vg.jpg"/></a> A very poor 1905 half crown which I believe is quite rare. <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9577_zps6qstibxe.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9577_zps6qstibxe.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9577_zps6qstibxe.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9578_zpsjcrcbffq.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9578_zpsjcrcbffq.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9578_zpsjcrcbffq.jpg"/></a> An 1849 half crown: <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9586_zpsxjin3iqq.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9586_zpsxjin3iqq.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9586_zpsxjin3iqq.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9585_zpsg0ocy63n.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9585_zpsg0ocy63n.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9585_zpsg0ocy63n.jpg"/></a> An 1839 shilling <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9588_zpsa3wy2vkn.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9588_zpsa3wy2vkn.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9588_zpsa3wy2vkn.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s392.photobucket.com/user/stevemersy/media/IMG_9587_zpsmfubczz2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp8/stevemersy/IMG_9587_zpsmfubczz2.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9587_zpsmfubczz2.jpg"/></a>

    Reviewing an old collection

Dave, thanks. As a new member I am reluctant to take advantage of anyones expertise , but if it is ok, I will pick out some items that look interesting. I will get the camera out when I get the chance. Thanks.

Copper, thanks for the reply. Yes there are quite a few 1950 pennies, 1952 sixpence, 1946 and 1949 threepenny bits etc. But it does go a bit further than rare dates from his change, though he was a shopkeeper and he would obviously see a lot of cash and would keep hold of anything he saw of value. Weighing-in the pre 47 silver was a big part of his later years and I am pleased to see that prices for that have improved a lot. But he did deal a little bit, and it looks like he kept back a few interesting things amongst it all. His box of half crowns looks interesting and there seem to be some nice examples of shillings, but there are hammered coins too. The crowns go back to William III, though there are more later ones. It is such a mix and so much is probably of low value, it will take me a while sort it all out. A job for the winter nights. My plan is to thin it down to something more focussed I can appreciate.

    Reviewing an old collection

Hi, I have just rediscovered a collection my father and I put together back in the sixties, and in trying to get to get to grips with what I have, I found this excellent site. So let me say hello. I am in the process of working out just what I have. Much of it is only fit for scrap, but I have found a few nice items. That said, it is a very widely spread collection with bit of everything and needs thinning down. There are just so many items, it is all a bit daunting. Maybe someone could give me some advice on the current state of the market and whether it is a good time to be selling? Also, is eBay a good place to move things on?
