  1. Recently picked up this shilling at a coin shop. While in the process of cataloging it I noticed some differences with this shilling to others I have and that I can find online or in my reference books. The legend on the reverse is missing the AE after the QV right after the mint mark. The other difference is in the top left corner of the shield. I can see that sometimes when the lis(s) are worn they appear as a heat shape but on my coin it appears that it is simply a heart, not worn down lis. The bottom right of the shield may have the heart too but it's a little worn there to tell for sure. The fact that it is multiple stuck reinforces my thought that it's not worn that way. Any thoughts? Cheers. Apologies for the slightly blurry cell phone pictures.
  2. That's along the lines of what I thought but wanted to get another opinion just in case. Thanks for the quick reply.
  3. I just picked up this 1737 shilling the other day and I'm curious about the date on it. It looks like something is going on with the 3, it seems way too full even though it's a little worn. Think something else was stamped there too?
  4. It certainly is, not sure what I was thinking as I typed that. Been looking at way too many coins today, trying to refocus the collection. Thanks.
  5. I have a few Victoria crowns but it's not what I usually pick up. This one came with a grouping of other coins I picked up a month or so ago and have just gotten to sorting through. I think it looks pretty good with good details. What are your opinions on it? Thanks
  6. I'll take some different pics with a better camera and post them up, those were the best I could do with the one at hand. Thanks for the advice.
  7. After getting the great feedback with my first post I thought I'd try a couple more that I'm curious about. These 2 coins were some of the first to be added to my collection before I really knew too much and wasn't being the smartest about researching the coin before purchase. It was more of a 'that looks cheap I should buy it' mentality. My questions are: for the Henry, is it authentic and any idea on Spink #, for the Charles did I get the number right? I think it is 2779. I'm pretty sure the mm is the triangle in the circle. I know both are not in the best of shape, one clipped the other worn but any input is appreciated. Thanks again. I'll throw the Charles in this post and the Henry in the next.
  8. I'd go along with John on this one, certainly better than NVF and actually looks quite a decent coin but bear in mind my normal rider about 'in the hand... etc.' I like the fact that others like it, I really like it myself. I feel pretty good about the coin (as good an an amateur such as myself can i guess). Really appreciate all the feedback. I'm actually just about to throw a couple more on for opinions.

Thanks for the welcomes. Lots and lots to read on here.
  10. It's BCW Threepence LC-1:c 8/1 variant, so not so common it has to be said! However, it has a nasty clip, which pulls it back a lot. In balance, if it was mine, I wouldn't want to see much less than £100 for it, though you might have to wait some time for a variety collector to spot it. At £80ish 30-day BIN on eBay, I'd say you'd eventually get a bite! Nice, not that I'm looking to sell it but good to know. Thanks for the helpful info. I've got some more coins in the collection that I've got questions about so I'll be throwing some more pics up in the next few days/weeks.
  11. Interesting, that hammered was a throw in to seal the deal. I didn't think it was anything special. Any idea on value for it?
  12. Where's that plantain skin, they're bigger? Definitely very cheap, as azda says, would really like to see the obverse of the shilling! The threepence looks to be the rarer 8/1 too...I know it makes no logical numismatic sense, but BCW have cataloged one! Could even be a 9 under the 0 (though difficult to tell from the images), making for a mix of the BCW varieties. They do, of course, also list an 80/79 (much more logical), but your underlying number looks much more 1-like (not that I've been able to tell 1's from 2's recently ). I'll take some more pics and post them up soon. And here they are. Obverse of the shilling and a closeup of the date on the Liz

  14. This one was bought along with a few others (pics attached, missing one side of shilling as I'm limited to 150kb) from a local collector. Total was about $400 Cdn if I remember correctly. Thought it was a good deal, these types of coins are hard to come across locally over here.
