    Genuine fakes

In a moment of weakness I went into one of the antique shops here in Singapore to look through the trays of coins. I spent so long looking through them, with the nice old gent in the shop giving me an uniformed running commentary; I felt the need to let him rip me off a few dollars and bought 3 coins. I even gave the guy a chance to come clean; “these are copies, right?” to which he gave the astonished reply “no, all genuine” If any of you agree with him I’d be happy to sell these on to you:-)

    Chinese what?

The large characters say: Peaceful prosperous snake year The smaller ones below say something like: Made at the Mint factory ShenYang in China. Here in Singapore the mint produces special medallions like this & for other occasions. Not legal tender but usually gold or silver. A bit of Googling around Shenyang mint reveals similar. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shenyang-mint-1988-Lunar-Dragon-brass-33mm-china-coin-medal/322088060482?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3Dd797cb89c8b241729b247fe309d878a9%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D161820302544
  4. Anyone know anything about Chinese coins? Today I went to a pottery out in the sticks of Singapore. Quite a fascinating ramshackle sort of place. In among all the pots etc for sales they had boxes of stuff looking like it had been gathering dust for years. There was this faded (1980?) book collection of China coins from 1914. I was immediately interested because they didn’t look like fakes. It very difficult to out here to find coins that are not “reproductions”. That red document in the back looks like a certificate of authenticity; but of course that could also be fakeJ. Think I might go back and make the guy an offer. Any thoughts on price?
  5. I see in the news a 600kg hoard of roman coins has been found by construction workers in Spain. I wish I could find a hoard like that. I wouldn’t declare it the authorities. I’d spread all the coins out on my bed and roll naked in them.

    Treasure pool

During my summer holiday trip back home to the UK I took my son on a tour of Ingleborough caves in Yorkshire. There was this pool where visitors had thrown coins. The guide said visitors had been doing this since the caves opened to the public in 1837 and nobody has disturbed them since then. Wouldn’t mind an hour in that pool. And a big wheelbarrow.

    new 2015 coins

Like the Queen Mum, my grandfather was a frequent visitor to the East End during the dark days of the blitz, but he was never hailed as a hero by the people of London. That's because he flew Heinkel bombers for the Luftwaffe.

    Today's acquisition

Today's treat purchased from my local pawnshop. Also I saw a crown collection from the Isle of Man in there; surprising because I live in Singapore. Here's a picture of the same thing on ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1983-Isle-of-Man-Bicentenary-of-Manned-flight-UNC-Crown-set-SNo33159-/331291793474?pt=UK_Coins_BritishRegional_RL&hash=item4d22879842 The guy wanted S$108 for them (£52). I really like them but not that much.

    New Coin Designs For 2014

Yes, but we know different now, than all the population that was fed blatant propaganda at the outset of the war. NOW we know that millions died in vain in a futile titanic struggle between Empires, and it honours absolutely no-one, not even Kitchener, that every death in WW1 is now "commemorated" by that now ridiculed and risible poster. As you say, 100 years have passed, and we should be taking a respectful stand as the Queen does every November 11th at the Cenotaph. Suppose instead of a red poppy she and all the people there, wore T Shirts carrying that poster? The nation would be in uproar and rightfully so. I don't agree with your analysis but don't want to delve more into this. I assume you will not be joining my campaign to get the Kitchener image on to the new 2 euro coin?

I quite like the Kitchener coin. Not keen on the rest though. I also support him being on the coin. No public characters come up squeaky clean but they are part of our history and so we shouldn’t shy away from them. If they stimulate debate then all the better. The Kitchener image is iconic and was everywhere 100 years ago so is relevant. Whatever your views on WW1 from 100 years distant the view at the time was that we were under a real and serious threat. Kitchener played a big part in mobilising the nation against that and was himself a casualty of the war.
  12. Made my day! At first my missus thought it was a 1p coin. But how on earth did it end up back in circulation after a century!
  13. Thanks Guys I think I prefer the unworn version. Fancy a swap?
  14. Hello All. Anyone know what this is? It’s copper based despite the photo colour. Well worn & misshapen but I think that’s George III...
