Cleaned 1887 crown.

Recommended Posts

Still is a nice coin to have to study the detail.

It does look as if something was used to clean it,if you look at the teeth below the head on the Crown and also in the teeth to the left of the head on the D Florin, there looks to be powder residue left behind,You could try to remove a little to see if it is a powder, however could run the risk seller saying you tried to tamper with the coin.

Just a thought,if the coin has been thumbed, it would mean that it has been done to deceive, rather than someone cleaning it without knowing the damage they caused in doing so.

I was looking for a post in the predecimal forum that showed some coins, (German I think), that had been photographed under different light conditions. The thing that was striking was for the same coin two different results could be obtained. firstly a coin with a patina and no hairline scratching and secondly the same coin with little patina and many hairline scratches. I'm afraid I could not find the post but if anyone can remember the post it may contribute to this debate and also install the notion of buyer beware.

This is what I have been saying Oz, the pics can show/hide a multitude of sins, even without being doctored

I think the most important feature of goom's coin (regardless of how it's came about) is that there 'appears' to be no significant lustre in the fields! You can see some toned-lustre around the devices but, the tone that can be seen in the central fields, is not the luminous-looking tone you'd expect to see over big lustre, which a coin of this grade should be showing bags of!

Then the question comes regarding how that could've come about and, most importantly, can you live with it? I don't know how much Dave paid for his, but I'd rather add whatever I had to to your £107 to have one like that instead? I'm thinking you probably would too?

Did we not discuss under another thread that under European law any buyer has the right to return anything purchased on the net within fourteen days.

At the end of the day so much of this is opinion as to grading, cleaning etc. Surley if you want to maintain good will you just accept it back. End of.

How many buyers who have had you refund money promptly would refuse to buy from you again? Very few I would suggest.

That's only true if you are buying from a business. If buying from an individual, you only have the right to return if there is a breach of contract such as the item received is not as was described. The advice from Which is quite useful.

However, as you say, any seller whether business or individual who wants to maintain their reputation would just accept it back, refund and move on.

Get rid, Goom! Too much money! That isn't the coin we see in the sellers photos, which, I may add, was probably not meant to deceive, just how photography works sometimes...just not a class coin by your images!

Sorry!

Definitely has hairline marks on it. Like the gloves where did you get them from.
