Took a quick look 2 of mine with 1 over 1 in that high position  have the open P and two with the 1 same have the closed P ....I will add the images tomorrow three if we include the new one all the 8's on these are normal.  As I say the only 8's I have doubled the 8 is to the side

I have tried to get the best from the photo I have but when it arrives I will do a better job.   As I say there is a smaller first 1 the 8 and the last 1 distinctly smaller above sticking out I will check my overs to compare

I've just checked my own 1861 over 1 and, surprise surprise, it also has an open P, although I can't make my mind up whether it's exactly the same font as seen on my F20 and the F36 and 37 proofs.

422810042_1861F331over1zoom3.JPG.62ad699ee2178e641540021f7fd8eaf9.JPG99622813_1861F20revzoom.jpg.d790b66e3b6e93f1e69af1d6ef526cf2.jpg1944330531_1861F36proofrevzoom.JPG.3b8cbe1921254472aaee903165134f9d.JPG2097910714_1861F37proofreveditedzoom1.jpg.c14b941eeb0c77cb20e805d6fbb05c32.jpg

F33 1 over 1, F36, F37, F20 - it's the foot of the P that is clearly indented on the right hand 3 coins but I'm not sure about the F33.

Interestingly, the F36 also has a 1 over 1 although the date is wider:

thought we could compare the profiles sorry mine are different scales

that looks very much like the same one with the 8 over an 8 .  the 8 does appear to be smaller and the overstruck high 1 smaller , thanks for that

They look almost identical with a closed P too ,  the only difference I can see is the lower "small 8" on mine seems to be sticking out just below making the angle of the larger 8 different and I think although I cannot be sure the first 1 also is over a smaller 1

In my opinion they ARE the same - it's the different rates of wear that may account for the minute differences.

yes you are likely correct and the red one I just saw and purchased tuesday I do not have the best pictures of yet until it arrives.  I was really interested in the 8 hence I wondered if a half penny numeral 1861 existed as in the 62 .

Spinks e-auction now online and a couple of their penny descriptions aren't brilliant either..... including a far better than usual 1854 No Colons, Bramah 17a

Thanks for the heads up on this Ian. Just won for £210 hammer (so £252 with 20% juice added). As you say far better than normal.

Will do pics when it arrives, as Spinks often don't do justice to the coin, with their seemingly less than high definition photos.

There is a degree of absolute blind faith in the NGC it would not shock me if this would lead to a re-writing of the text books as a new variety

Unreal.

I reckon you could tell them what you like, and it would be accepted as fact.

Don't throw good money after bad. Crack it out and move on. And treat the TPG as the sh*tshow it manifestly is. Don't reward them for getting it wrong

So here are my pics, I'd rate the coin as a straight VF, which is pretty much above the average for this rare piece. I'd already got one, but it's only VG, and cleaned to within an inch of its life.

Once again Ian, thanks.

I have a lower grade example of the 1854 No Colons for sale, which can do for around a third of what Mike paid for the above coin.

PM me if interested.

The 1854 no colons penny is decidedly scarce if not rare.

Maybe once or twice a year, an example will present itself somewhere, generally in worn condition.

Finally have time to take pictures of the 1853 Penny Intermediate colon received before.  Pity that there's edge bruise at obverse, however it's still a lovely penny to appreciate.
