I was hoping someone would ask that. Both of mine are straight, I think.

top one is my straight one . bottom is the wavy one .It looks wavy with a loupe , but magnified more ,it has a narrower top part and it looks like the wavy part is caused by the number being more chamfered at the bottom .20200727102034.jpg.910379f7dc2dc18849e240a4d264118d.jpg20200727100707.jpg.6b296272e4f6016960632e94ed2ff92c.jpg

Any idea of the ratio of 1856 PT small and large dates, Ian ?

Ok, I have done this now Richard. It actually wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but I'm pleased that you asked me for this information because I was a little surprised at the results. I had always thought that there were definitely more of the 'Large Numeral' type than the 'Small Numeral' type, but it turns out they were pretty close. I spent about 3 hours zooming in on all the images, and then double checked I had sorted correctly, Any that I was unsure about I did not include in the figures; some ebay pictures are not great!

Anyway, 138 over 5 years split as follows:-  21 Could Not Tell / 55 Small Numerals / 62 Large Numerals.

Hope that's useful for some members.

I've got 6 stacked up- all so similar- maybe there is one that has the base slightly incuse, but one is much sharper and pointed like Terry's above, and there are different widths, and some with the 2 leaning to the right...that one of Terry's leans to the left....all tiny changes, nothing major.

....and quite apart from that, it's actually a very nice coin with a lot of eye appeal.....

I'm wondering if this is actually some sort of optical illusion arising from other features of the 2 - when I hold something over the rest of the 2 on the one's touted as possible wavy line examples above, the base of the 2 appears dead straight.

Yes, I'm not yet convinced.

Nor me. Without more evidence I'd have to conclude that this is a case of someone seeing what they want to see, or making something out of nothing.

It does smack of  a slightly mis-aligned 2 over 2...

LOL, that is my take on many "types" - when is enough clear variance enough to make it a type? IMO many of the "dot" varietals are somewhat in the category of this one.

Well this one just gave me a jump! Sorting through an old dealer's box of random coins marked at 50p each (I bought the box of 100+ coins for £5) I was stopped in my tracks by this one. Obviously a fake, but not bad as they go and should give some good banter in the market!

The obverse is very real looking.

I don't think it's legit though, that 9 on the reverse looks iffy.

It IS real. It's an altered date, but a very nice example. :)

I know Chris. I was being a bit tongue in cheek.

But yes, you're right, it is a very good example. Quite convincing.

AardHawk made a posting Apr 2008 in which he drew attention to a Sept 1976 Coin Monthly article, "Further Varieties of the 1902 Penny" by A R Alexander and A M Lisk. Whilst the article does not specifically mention "wavy 2s",  it does go into some depth regarding Shape of 2 and pointings, suggesting at least 13 varieties. Worth a look and a consideration I think.
