Good evening, I've been given this coin from a customer who 4 years ago unblocked a drainage trench near where we live.( St Fagans castle) Cardiff . Due to his wise curiosity checked every spadeful of mud that emerged and out popped this coin. I've checked Colin cookes website and I've managed to make out that it's :

year could be 1698,

Weighs 9.31g

Can see a full stop after the(S')

Obverse reads - GVLIELMVS TERTIVS'

Reverse-corroded but BRITAN ?NIA is possible to make out.

Year 10% what I see is 1698 not sure.

Could any body shed some light on which variety it is there are so many 1698-1699.post-8406-0-06691900-1416595077_thumb.jp

Thanks peckris,

hi Scott, what's your thoughts on the coin , it doesn't fit into my collection at all.

Was intrested in any info you could share about it.

I know that st Fagans castle was built late 1580s.

Will have to look up "exerge"

They were only struck for the first 3 months of 1698, as there was a glut of halfpence and farthings in certain parts of the country. An Act of Parliament to stop coining being passed on 12th May 1698 and effective from the 24th June. This explains the relative rarity of the 1698 1/2d.

Exergue " a space on a coin, token, or medal usually on the reverse below the central part of the design" ...

Got it..

Thanks rob . Where Would I find that information to read up on it?

Exergue is the date under Britannia

There is also a type with the date in the legend.

Peck. Otherwise known as English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum 1558-1958, p167.

Not cheap, but essential reading for any serious copper collector. If you want a copy, I have a couple available.

Yes peck and archbishop keep popping up in my research lately .. Will definatley purchase a copy . From you if there is one available .

Thankyou all for your help.

Might not be in my own collection for to long , will move it along and recycle the monies back into my own hoard.( still learning)

From what I can gather the last one came up for sale in 2005 realising 640 at auction. Would love to know what I'm dealing with.

Unless I'm missing something here, we are talking in 10's not hundreds for your coin? A nice historical entry into coins, though! :)

no idea, but they do not turn up often

would love a copy peck myself but they are out of my price range :(

the top price ones are higher grade, but yea, these do not turn up often, at a push it would fetch £20 given the damage.

Most generous Garrett.

A true thoughtful gent.

One tip to preserve you coin books is a trip to Wickes where they use a heavy gauge polythene bags/sacks for their sand etc.

Perfect for covering your books.

I don't think he's twigged that 10 of his regular job lot purchases would equal a copy of Peck.

Scott

I have Montagu,.

I believe it is now online on google books.(FOC)

Bramha,Batty and Montagu were condensed by Peck's work.

(Pecks 2nd edition in 1970)

I know Colin Cooke was working on a new farthing publication

before his untimely death.

Colin Goode (aboutfarthings)is working on a farthing publication but Peck's work is still the bible

and most complete work on all cu denominations.

The wife was going to see someone and her journey was not too far out of the way, so she dropped it off as she was sort of passing. Better than waiting until Wednesday to receive it.

Very generous Garrett, there really is a great bunch of folks on this forum.

On the subject of the farthing it is a difficult variety, but as pointed out the damage would massively detract. I agree you are probably talking gap filler and £10's of pounds would be more appropriate.
