Hi all

Recommended Posts

I just started collecting coins last year, having been given one as a gift, and at 60, am starting rather late!

I'm focusing on British, both pre/post decimal and buying items that I look the look of rather than following a strategy at this stage. My wife and I were in a coin shop yesterday, looking at hammered coins. As a keen fan of history, I found that aspect fascinating.

Lots to learn!

Chris

Hi and welcome Chris! Hopefully you'll find here as informative and helpful as the rest of us have!

It's a fun hobby and suits budgets from zero (coins from change or metal detecting), near-zero (coin shop or junk shop 'bargain bins') up to the price of a decent proportion of the housing stock of a Northern English town!

If you're interested in history then coins can be a great way to bring it to life. I certainly know rather more about the first half of the 1600s than I did before I started to collect. Despite all those lessons on the Tudors and Stuarts!

And of course if you keep going back, then there's a whole world to discover in Roman coins, from those that were found locally to the reaches of the then-known world. (No, of course I didn't mean Scotland ..) :D

Hi Chris

Welcome.

My coins relax me and I find the learning part rewarding.

If you want to dabble in hammered I would suggest you purchase a book "Englands Striking History" to whet your appetite.

£7 or £8 from this site or amazon.
