Penny 1863

1863 English Penny

Recommended Posts

Recently acquired a 1863 English penny with a small three to the right of the date. It sits halfway between the date and the rim beads. Check photo. Also the three in the date is imposed over the top of a 3 or 7 that sits very high. The middle of the 3 almost touches the bottom 3 point

It's impossible to see from those photos. Is the small '3' to the right of the date properly formed, like the 1863 die number coins (where the 3 is below the date)?

the small 3 seems to be more rounded on the top unlike the die no3 variety. I,ll high resolution scan in the morning for clearer image

I can see a small lighter patch to the right of the last Digit, but the Picture is inconclusive of what it is exactly. For something of this nautre you'd Need really hi-res Pictures to accertain what you have

Struggling to tell from the pics ,however appears to be a die clash..If your sure its a 3 would be unique and very rare, not sure why it would be placed there though.
