Surely your favourite combination of trains and old black and white movies must be Will Hay's Oh Mr Porter, but that's a thirties film?

One of my favourites. Not a dud scene.

 "The next train's gone!"

Someone recently found where it was shot, and the line of the edge of the platform is still there in the ground.

My father insisted we went on a train ride in the early '60's - turned out I was on the last BR Severn Valley train.

Want a day out? Board at Kidderminster, all the way to Bridgnorth, lunch in a pub, and they sell Bathams beer on the train!!!!

Best combination ever.

Going back to my Father with his collection which he felt was complete after 40 years travelling the country - he'd tended to take the Seabys book and try to obtain the lowest minted in number for each denomination of UK coins, not a mean feat?! Some, because of their rarity were impossible to acquire but his pride and joy was an 1839 milled edge Halfcrown of which, if I remember correctly was rarity 6 or 7 in Seabys with only a few examples known! When he retired he sold his beloved collection so he and Mum could travel and enjoy their final years, which they did in style! Happy memories!

Since my first post I have been searching for the picture of us at the Cumberland in Marble Arch 1969, found it!

Ada is holding the cup we won for best stand in show! My Father is on the right. I don't remember my chubby cheeks?!

I remember that Coin Monthly used to have a regular feature on dealers, featuring a different one every month.

Colin,

Apparently Andre is still alive and kicking and behind the White Greyhound. Did he have something to do with your fougazi?

People say John Minshull is somewhere in the US these days if he's still alive. I would love to see an old Farthing Specialist catalogue from the late 70's/early 80's. That would be a trip down memory lane, always an exciting event every 6 months or so when a new one turned up.

There you go. Can anyone put a definitive date to this issue?

Thanks Rob, you've got a real collector's item there!

I think it's 1975, reading the small print. Inflation 20-30% and John Minshull trying to book a holiday for 1975 in 1974. A couple of years before my time.

I think my first one was 77 or possibly 76. Pale blue unfolded A4 with a spine binder (unlike later ones, all after that were just stapled until I stopped getting them in 82-83). I also remember he was very pleased with his new typewriter which could do all these new fonts. Mr MInshull (I was only a boy then!) always liked to big up a special coin on the front cover (like the Cromwell farthing here), one time he had a 1685 Charles II farthing and he really went to town on the description of that one!

I initially thought early 1975 given he was talking holiday bookings, but with consumer prices up 16.4 in 1974, 23.6 in 1975 and 11.5 in 1976, it would suggest later in the year as inflation figures take a bit of time to compile.

Sounds right to me, though I was more interested in the price of curly-wurlies then!

Have you got any more of those lists?

Just got a LT 1902 1/2d....my plan worked perfectly....early bid as if a standard 1902 £4.20 until the last few seconds...two others had noted but I had my bid in.😊

£20 lighter but a NVF completes my 1/2d's.....most are EF+....(1895-1970 RIP).....skip around the garden time.

I've found a couple.

Don't know about you but I always thought his EXCESSIVE USE OF CAPS AND EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!! made for something of an exhausting read beyond the first page or two.

He was never one to underplay his wares!

Thanks for posting those - they must be early 90's if it's 23 years from 1969 (if that is what he means).

I never got round to asking Colin Cooke if he had some - too late now.

He states 'full time' since 1969, not established that year.

Can't be sure, but would think those are probably from sometime in the mid to late 1980s, certainly before we moved to Cambridge in '92, as I don't remember buying from him after leaving Liverpool.

I have a number of Colin Cooke sales lists too from the same time and into the early to mid 1990s, plus a couple from someone named David Webb in Hartley, Kent.

Surely, the person on the right, wearing the pinny, isn't that Andy Fairweather Low?…….

Hi all,

Thanks for this post!

I well remember Terry Page, he was another friend of my Fathers and he also had a shop in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst in the New Forest!

which was only 8 miles from where we lived. He was a very genial man and very knowledgable about all aspects of the Antiques trade.

He 'found' a lot of coins for my Fathers collection over the years.

Happy days!

Terry

Given my list is 1975 and no. 44 and yours are 57 & 58, the latter should be early 80s at the latest, o/w list 1 would have been by appointment to Queen Victoria.

You're right, that crossed my mind after I wrote. Thinking about it, FS lists in my time were possibly every 6-9 months...ish I dimly recall??, so list 57 must have only been a few years later. Maybe he did smaller and more frequent lists early on. Colin Cooke told me he used to supply FS with coins in his early days before he became a dealer in his own right.
