I was listening to Hawkwind.

Ah now we're talking....the Live '79 album is probably the most perfect music of the 20th Century. That and the Inkspots anyway.

Bloody Hawkwind. By which I mean the band masquerading under that name by the only surviving member Dave Brock. Yet not so many years ago I went to see Space Ritual.net, who comprised Nik Turner, Dave Anderson, Del Dettmar, Terry Ollis and his son Sam, and who were, by any definition, more Hawkwind than Hawkwind if you see what I mean. The only thing lacking was the nude dancer Stacia but I think she would have had to send her daughter anyway

yes (the band) albums were pretty arty but they slowly went downhill after the yes album anyways as regards the music , or maybe it just got too complicated for my small brain.

The Yes Album is one of my favourite albums of all time! Genuine classic.

That's beyond dispute for all prog rock fans, it did get rather silly and pretentious after that for a while IMO for many prog bands but I didn't mind at the time!

Wind and wuthering, genesis, a band at the peak of creativity and not a bad track on it with many tracks anyone would die to have written

And all while punk was having its day in the sun gutter, too! Actually, I think Then There Were Three is a much maligned album containing some great songs.

Both of those albums are a bit late for my taste. "Nursery Cryme" and "Selling England by the Pound" are my two favourites.

Selling England... is arguably my favourite Genesis album of all, and unarguably a classic. I can always listen to 'Firth of Fifth'.

That would be my second favourite - gorgeous synth. Especially the way it segues into Aisle Of Plenty with all those painful supermarket name puns:

"Easy love, there's a safe way home

Thankful for her fine fair discount, Tess Co-operates" :)

For some reason, after listening to that, I always get the number 17 1/2 stuck in my mind :D

Creative writing at its best! Jane Austen would be proud.

OK I shall come out now as a MASSIVE Genesis fan. For those of you who like the older stuff, and if you don't already know of it, I could not recommend this more highly:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genesis-Archive-1-1967-1975-CD-1998-/271280583442?pt=UK_CDsDVDs_CDs_CDs_GL&hash=item3f29953312

It has by far the best quality Peter full Lamb Lies Down Live, plus much else over 4 CDs. The kind of thing we tried to get as students as bootlegs but far better quality.

While this one has by far the best live version of Ripples I have ever heard (surprising that it wasn't on Seconds Out), and is worth buying just for that:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genesis-Archive-No-2-Three-CD-set-with-booklet-/181222257259?pt=UK_CDsDVDs_CDs_CDs_GL&hash=item2a31b0326b

Finally if you diehard Genesis fans haven't yet seen the Canadian tribute band 'The Musical Box' ... do. End of.

Here is the link to the Ripples track, borders on perfection to me!:

Thanks for the Ripples link - that's a definite MacTube download! (Oops, I never said that* ). Always been one of my favourite tracks. 'Trick Of The Tail' comes pretty close to 'Selling England By The Pound' in my personal Genesis pantheon.

We prided ourselves on 'discovering' Genesis when at Uni, when they were virtually unknown before 'Foxtrot'. I saw them 3 or 4 times back then. One of them you wouldn't believe - it was AFTER Foxtrot was released but they obviously had to fulfil a booking made before then : they were second on the bill to Medicine Head (no, really!) in a University hall of residence 'bop' where there was no proper stage, just a temporary structure of wooden blocks. Yet professional to the end, they did the full show - Gabriel with his flower head, then the long red dress with fox head. All I can say is 'Wow, just to be there. Did it really happen?'

*sadly, he seems to have protected it from download :( happily, someone else has the same version on YouTube :)

If you use FireFox and install the extension "DownloadHelper" you can download and "save to file" any YouTube video (or other sites for that matter, Vimeo for example) that appears to be protected against download.

Thanks for that - but I usually find there's more than one version up there.

I'd have put Churchill on the £20, kept Darwin on the £10 and put Austen on the £5.

I note "Sir John Houblon" is on the £50. I'm not sure he's well known enough to be on a banknote. Maybe take him off and put another woman on to make up the numbers ? Not sure who.

Not Thatcher, hopefully. Maybe a suffragette ?

Incidentally, when are they going to update the profile of the Queen. The woman's 87 and still looks about 48 on the banknotes.

Incidentally my brother has met jon anderson a few times and every time he said the guy appeared to be tottally out of his tree , admitiedly it was straight after a yes concert , he says he wanders round hugging and shaking hands saying peace and love crap and not really responding to any questions .

I bet hes been the same for fourty years now.

yes are the band that has made the least over the years from cover versions!!!!

I like it all, although how they could leave Gary Moore out of that history is a mystery!

Plug In Baby was voted the best riff of the 21st century in some guitar magazine or other ... mind you the century was only 1 year old when it came out!
