I tried joining just out of interest but when I tried to register it said "We do not allow Registration with Free Email addresses"

Anone know what that means? And why? (My email is a Yahoo account and the only other one is hotmail, so I can't register?? Seems daft).

That's very weird. Who on earth PAYS for an email address these days? I think they must mean "hotmail-type" email addresses (MS Live, Gmail, etc), but it would help if they said so. Is Yahoo! the same type as Gmail? Do you not have any email addresses as offered by your ISP? If not, I would take up one of them and use it for registration at sites like that.

Never heard of that forum Richard or why registration is not possible

Yes, they are all webmail. And no, we never bothered with ISP mail as we've changed providers several times and hotmail offers us everything we needed. It seems daft they don't like web-based mail as it's so commonplace. Unfortunately there's no contact details so I can't even mail them to ask!

I just wanted to see a recent find someone had posted about (and maybe offer some IDing expertise) so it's no real loss to me, just strange.

Funnily enough, I'm still using my original (diallup) ISP email addresses from 15 years ago. When I got broadband with another supplier, I never cancelled my old diallup service, though as I don't use it anymore - except for those email addresses - it doesn't cost me a penny. In your case, you wouldn't lose from taking up one of your current ISP's email addresses and using it ONLY for registration at silly sites that insist on them. If you change your supplier again, you will already have registered for the site so it won't matter if you lose that address (don't ever lose or forget your password though!).

Just wonder how many UXBs i can find in Munich. They found one 2 weeks ago not far from me, they had to blow it up and the cost for the damage was around €4,000,000 lol

It is worth watching the DVD and do plenty of experiments with different metals.

Research into the local area is the key....keep off the UK/US bombs ;)

Stricter rules here regarding detecting which i'm going to have to find out about. I actually bought it yesterday from an old School friend who had put a few finds on Facebook and turns out he was selling 2 machines.

Its staying in Scotland for now and next time i'm over i'm going to go out into the Heels and Glens, maybe over pitlochry way and see what turns up.

Regarding the freemail situation. I'm guessing this is all to do with spambots that come from most freemail addresses. I've encountered this once before with my German web.de address. There are 2 versions of this though, the free one and a paying one. I use the paying one because i'm Scottish and tight as a ducks arse, dunno why it would happen to an Englishman though

Yeah, the bot thing makes sense. But I already have three webmail addresses and the yahoo one is for occasional sites so getting yet another email address to view a photo someone has posted just seems a lot of trouble to go to .. shame.

As administrator of a website I can say that freemail addresses such as gmail are a pain in the butt.

The spammers are now using yahoo.co.uk so all those addresses are suspect.

A lot of sites are banning their use to save time sorting the wheat from the chaff although I must admit that it is more normal to have the option to email the site asking for entry.

We used to spend an awful lot of time deleting spammers until we went for direct approval of all registrations. This removes spambots access altogether since registration has to be manual. An email is sent out to new registrants telling them to verify by visiting a link. False emails are immediately bounced except for people like gmail who tend to just lose them in cyberspace.

The gmail email addresses among other free ones are particularly annoying because the presence of a full stop anywhere in the address name is not recognised as different by them but it is by the receiving site. Which means you can't exclude a particular email address unless you exclude it complete with all combinations of full stops. The easiest option is to ban all @xyzmail.com addresses.

A quick check of the IP of those that manually get through to moderator approval for records of spam and they're gone if they're bad. Persistence is rewarded by having the IP excluded so they can't see the site at all. Anyone from China, Russia or the Ukraine are immediately rejected. They can appeal if they so desire.

Site membership rejection is usually left to me so that I can track repeat offenders. Approval is done by any one of three administrators so that new applicants are not waiting too long.

Makes for an easier life. B)

As a PS to the above.

There is also a big problem with compromised PCs.

There are an awful lot of people who don't realise that their PC is being controlled by someone else to send spam. Or their email address has been hacked.

A person who is perfectly innocent can find themselves excluded from sites such as ours because their IP has been used by spambots and is recorded on sites such as Stop Forum Spam.

PLEASE stop calling it "freemail". All email addresses these days are free, unless one has paid for one's own personal domain address, which few people do. The correct term for what we're discussing is "hotmail" or "webmail", to distinguish it from the free POP email addresses which you get from your ISP.

That probably explains the problem I had when I tried to re-register with Spink. But hotmail, yahoo and gmail (particularly the last two in the US) are commonplace with perfectly honest people like me, as well as bots.

I'd imagine that it's going to be a problem for forums, groups or online shops when the majority of your potential members or customers can't register. There needs to be a better way than just saying 'no' without leaving some means for people to email an administrator!

Never used one so I wouldn't know the correct term for it. I suppose webmail is the more correct unless you can use them via POP.

Since the email boxes you get from your IP are part of the package along with webspace etc., they're not exactly free.

I guess you could argue that they are part of the "package", but as I said above, I'm still using the email addresses from my original ISP to whom I don't pay a penny anymore. But I agree that's not the norm.

Yes, you can change webmail settings so they also download to your computer's email client as POP mail - as I use both types, I find that very convenient.

As far as I know it doesn't apply so much to online shopping. The big problem is for online forums where instant membership gives the spammers chance to download whatever they please. Usually filling up posts with pornography or promoting medicines such as viagra, mobile phones or themselves.

Hiding links in text under innocuous words is a favourite.

Having a way of contacting the site to protest one's innocence is a must as far as I'm concerned. Lack of the facility is just shooting yourself in the foot.

I'm in the process of removing an applicant from the site I administer who has an email address of @yahoo.co.uk despite being in the Ukraine and having been reported for spamming 24,953 times.

So finally found out where i can go to find the protected areas of Bayern, i was most surprised to find out that where i live is a massive protected site, i assume it's because of the 1972 Olympics as i'm in the area of the Olympia Stadion and Village. The football pitch near the top of the picture is just behind my house and all the red/pinks areas are protected areas.

The second picture is where i'm headed tomorrow, should take me a year or so to get through

So basically, you can dig the river and people's houses. But not under ... streetlights, is that? How unreasonable! :P

Well, have fun then! And of course, let us know what you find!
