Text books for Jubilee crown die pairings?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone its been a while since I've posted but was hoping I could get some pointers. In a nutshell I'm looking for a book that goes in to detail about the die pairings of Vicky jub head crowns. It may be worth mentioning I already have Davies and the ESC, a friend has mentioned there is a book that covers this subject but can't remember which book it is. Any ideas anyone?

I personally don't know, why don't you ask your friend again and then let us know? Sounds the more logical route :)

If you have Davies, then the next step is to ask our fellow-member 1887Jubilee, who knows more about that date than anyone else.

Azda its a case of my friend knowing that such a book exists but he can't remember the title hence me asking here.

Peckris thanks for the pointer.

H W A Linecar and A G Stone.

1968 116pp. Illustr. Standard ref Patterns listed with chapter and verse on their rarity

Only Crown publication I can think of, try galata books, always has a good listing of publications

Thank you for that vote of confidence. There was a thread about the 1887 Crowns that had quite a lot on die varieties and I put the link below for your help.

This is not published as far as I know because I have only done the research in the last couple of years. There are other problems apart from the obvious one that the obverse size varies a lot with the use of the pantograph. It depends what depth you want to go into. There are certainly 4 reverses for 1887 alone and at least 20 obverses. As to die pairings. I regret that only the most common reverse is paired with all the obverses. As yet I have insuficient data to say for sure if the other reverses are paired with all twenty+ obverses. Feel free to give me a ring on 07967505509 to discus. What varieties do you think exist?

Chingford thanks for the info on the book (£15 from Galata) should be worth checking out. I imagine this may be the book he was thinking off if its the only Crown publication you can think of although I wasn't just interested in proofs.

1887 Jubilee thanks for the link got me measuring the T's to the R's, although I scaled it down to a average of 5 measurements. As for what varieties I think exist I couldn't really say as I'm just looking for more information at the moment. Is it just the 1887 your interested in or all Jubilee heads?

Sorry to be so long replying. I just collect 1887 at the moment as there are about 300! If there is anything I can help with please call. Can you confirm your measurements range from 33.59-34.65. Have you found the ones with the broken serifs yet? Have you included the Spink & Son patterns? Give me a ring.

That's amazing, 300? I nearly fell in love with 1887 myself then for a second!

I have to confess, I am looking for a collecting 'slot' like this myself, anything to do with minute detail and perfection really appeals to me.

This collecting 'high' happens to me over and over again on this forum, the sudden realisation of the breadth and diversity of collecting coins, and the learning and specialist knowledge that comes even from collecting a single year.

Thanks for the inspiration!
