New Years Resolutions

It seems many here have had a very successful year of collecting (azda I have no idea where you find the space for your weekly coin deluges...). Anyone got any coin-related resolutions/goals for 2012? I'm looking to complete my halfcrown monarch run back to 1816, plus maybe get a couple of long cross pennies for some variety.

I do, I hope to become as conversant with many aspects of this as you lot, I want to have a complete set of decimal coins to date ( all UNC if possible )as well as a decent set of pre decimal coins. Particularly threepenny bits both bronze and silver, sixpences, half crowns and crowns.

Oh and any others I can lay my hands on in the meantime or between collections. Wasting time is a sin.

My main aim is to continue picking off more 1/4d varieties.I have now reshuffled my trays and left the gaps and have a working checklist of what I want.

I want to use my detector more,increase my dabbling in buying and selling using my daughters to help pay their way.

I also want to pick up any quality pieces as and when(if you make enough chances it does happen)

I also might push the boat out for a few 9-12C Kings.

The main thing is to continue learning and enjoying the hobby.

Space will never be a problem Boomstick, its having the cash at the right time etc. My goal this year is to try and get 1 or 2 rare coins to add to my small megre collection

Peter......you keep away from those hammered farthings!! An area that caught my eye in 2011.

My main task is to be in a position to potentially publish (something) by the end of 2012. I know a similar post in 2010 may have contained the same statement, but my full time job was crazy last year....I am determined to be more focused on this in 2012!!

Mine is to tick some more boxes taking the opportunity to acquire the rarities before the common options unless the common one is unusually good for the issue. Getting a Truro crown and an Exeter Tower/EX crown would help as I could then forget about those two mints. Ticking off some more rare mints along the way would also be good. Actually, any gap filled with an appropriately graded piece would be good - so it's as you were.

I'm just considering moving the Harrington,Rose et all accross to the farthing tray from the hammered including the ed 1's.

Cut 1d's will stay where they are.

You are right with pre 1672 1/4d's...there is a big hole that needs investigating/filling

The hammered silver are a great attraction but how many centred both sides do you see?

Any help required proof reading,pictures,comments,critisism,praise or other given FOC..

Can you link to it please. all I can see on google is a book about warfare on greeks.

It is the The Galata Guide to the Farthing Tokens of James I & Charles I by Tim Everson. It deals with only these specific pieces.

Mine is still to fill a few more Freeman/Gouby penny gaps, as and when I find the coins available. A couple of the gaps are supposed to be relatively easy but have proved very elusive in anything but poor grade (the two 1913 mules in UNC for example.... anyone tempted to part with one? Money waiting )

Later in the year I might extend my focus to include an entirely different area. I haven't decided which yet, but half crowns or crowns take my fancy. Early pennies are also an option, but I do generally prefer larger coins (apologies to the farthing collectors)! I have a fair few of both denominations already so something to work from.

Seriously? I ought to resist buying rubbish coins I later regret. Whether I will be succesful, that's another matter. Somehow as soon as I have funds I seem to find the saddest specimens becoming unbearably attractive. Like this .. scarce admittedly, but surely there's a better one out there ..?

The Spink and Petitoncrown's coins are both G2's with eye mark, I think Tom is highlighting the G1 with this mark which can prove to be tough to find, I don't know of any in near decent grade?

I always think it's well worth picking up a coin with a bit of rarity especially if it's going cheep!! But I agree the general run of the mill coins are better of waiting for from a good collection, so same resolution for me!!

Sorry, my fault, you are right, his is a G1. I was blinded by the quality of Tom's coin and not concentrating.

Good luck with that one. The only I've seen was in London Coins last auction which was estimated at £425-£525 and sold for £1000 hammer price.

i had it viewed, was told the obverse was deeply scratched, 425-525 with spink at 600 fdc as a guide, my dealer advised 300 tops for this piece. we were both gobsmacked at 1000 hammer. sign of the times......

I will be selling a large proportion of my collection to concentrate on 'type' collecting, whatever that may be!

For now, for me, it means all 1603-1946 English silver coins, one of each denomination and 'significant' type for each monarch, wondering if under this definition selling all my 'duplicates' will finance all my 'missings' ... not sure in the case of a Northumberland shilling and a Gothic Crown (although I might ignore proof only issues) ...

There, that's my 2012 strategy articulated!

What are the other rare 'biggies' I am missing I wonder?
