It appears we have had another (rather busy) unwelcome visitor. I deleted around 20 spam messages this morning. I believe I have blocked the 'member' from posting any more. But I've left the last posts that arrived after I'd cleared up in case Chris can glean anything from the IP address and block it. I'll tidy up the last posts later today or tomorrow.

If you want to reply on the threads feel free, though I'm pretty sure it's just a bot. I suggest nobody clicks on links as I'm sure you can buy your viagra cheaper elsewhere. Plus any replies will be deleted when the post goes later.

Who needs Viagra when Mrs Peter wears her tight t shirt with 1771 farthings on her thrupenny bits

I would also recommend a good bottle of red, comfy sofa and liberal lashings of grovelling.

I'm not sure if that's a waste of 1771 farthings or thrupenny bits.

Some forums admin vet every new applicant member before they can post ~ and that is for this very reason: spam posts.

Maybe consideration should be given for a similar approach here ?

I guess that'd be up to Chris. The only problem I can see is that someone would have to 'approve' the newcomers and Chris isn't on here much. I forget who else is a mod/admin, but assuming there are still a few active, or we get volunteers it could work. Again, it would be Chris who would need to set the level of what admins can and can't do in terms of deleting posts / members etc.

I think I over done it on the red...and the comfy sofa worked...ooops

This spam is becoming a real pain in the a**e. Adverts for everything under the sun in every language under the sun. Now a post for reverse phone calls. Virtually every birthday is for someone with a link to a site, 6 or 8 people frequently share the same birthday, all have the same age and have nothing to say about coins.

Rant over.

Thing is, whoever is ultimately responsible for all this spam, really can't have a lot of intelligence. As a form of advertising it is 100% useless. The only effect it has on nearly all sites, is to irritate both the owners and users, who, by definition, will have absolutely no interest whatsoever in what s being offered ~ and even that pre-supposes they can understand the garbage that forms the advert.

There must be a tiny % of idiots who respond to whatever it is. And maybe the profits wrung from that moronity make it all worth it?

Well, I've deleted and blocked what I can. But I don't have the ability to delete members, or in fact block them until they actually post something! So there may be a bit more spam before it's all sorted but I'll see what I can do.

The one from Sleedzef in Greek or whatever script is used has just reappeared and needs removing urgently as it is associated with a dangerous and intrusive site. My anti-virus software blocks any access to it automatically, but if anybody has a PC running without the latest versions of anti-virus from a reputable supplier then whatever you do, don't try to enter the site using the link in this post.

How are things looking now?

I've deleted all new members than have joined in the last 5 days.

I've also changed the security question, which should only be possible to answer if you're human! I don't know how they get around it.

I know there are clearly other spammers here that are not active but have links in their profiles and simply do nothing (to enable search engines to find their silly websites).

This always happens when I'm away! Next week I'll go through and remove the 'sleepers'.

Thanks so much for your efforts TomGoodheart.

Looking better (Hi Chris!) Did you see my message about the recent ones having a location or jabber as 143040? A couple joined as far back as September but have never posted. Might be worth getting rid of them too?

I suspect there are more but if they don't post I guess it doesn't really matter.

A good way of sorting out the potential spams is where they give their birthdays. A few weeks ago no less than 8 or 9 people shared a birthday, were the same age and had made no posts. They are all typically in their 20s.

Spam seems to have been all deleted, but i guess there isn't a 100% foolproof way to eradicate it all, especially in this digital world. Its probably something we'll have to live with, hopefully not to the same extent.

Just thought i'd mention this one to

http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6176

All he ever seems to do is advertise his wares, never talks about a coin, could be construed as spam i suppose.

Moronity would indeed be the collective noun to describe anyone willing to send money to Russia/Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan/Turkmenistan, or wherever this cyber rubbish emanates, on the vague hope that the junk they were ordering might actually turn up.

Almost like sending £1000 to certain gentlemen in Nigeria, on the promise of £1,000,000 being paid back to you as a winner. One I received actually referred to their "London Office" and gave an address. When I google Earthed, it turned out to be a disused petrol station in Hendon !!!

My wife who has A levels phoned me at work to tell me we had won a holiday to Florida..on the way home I bought a 5lb cod and slapped her in the chops.

It just seemed less typing than "moron minority" (which has a certain alliterative quality to it, don't you think?)

I did discuss that with him and suggest that he really doesn't need to start a new thread each time he puts a new listing up on ebay. I thought that if people are interested they will find the For Sale forum. But he seems to like to keep it up to date and as it isn't causing any problems I've left it up to him.

Yes I deleted the jabber/location ones you mentioned. And the new security question seems to be tripping them up at registration now. I assume that somewhere along the lines a human had told the spam bots what the previous answer was and that opened the doors.

I'll tackle the many sleepers nex week.

Some of them are a bit like those phone in sex lines we've all heard about. There is a human presence but apparently one never knows what their age or real sex is. :P

A site where I am part of the administration team has a strict vetting policy requiring a reply to an email sent to a prospective member which puts the prospective member in an administration queue for final approval. The system automatically rejects applications with false email addresses where the email bounces.

We've found that about half are automatic and usually involve false email addresses, the other half having some human involvement.

I used to keep a log in order to try to find repeat offenders but there were not enough repetitions to warrant the time taken. IP addresses are changed too easily and there are dedicated spam servers out there with their own series of IP address and 255 x 255 is an awful lot.

I have a fluid list of excluded IP and email addresses that prevents those on the list from seeing the site at all. These are all fairly obvious repeat offenders who try on a daily basis.

They seem to be spreading like a rash across t'internet and, unfortunately, we just have to learn to live with them and try to reduce the annoyance as much as possible.

What I can't understand is if you wanted to buy drugs you would prefer a discreet proffessional advert not something thats plastered all over a forum...I for one will take my business elsewhere.

I can only assume the links are malware and they just hope someone will stupidly click one. Because, like probably everyone else here, I'd be so irritated at the way the sites are marketed, I'd go elsewhere on principle.

Fortunately, like Peter, I have a comfy sofa and have never been attracted to the idea of having sex with a phone.
