Gouby lists the phenomenon for 1879, 1883, 1884, 1885 & 1886

Here's mine

can't believe this is a die flaw, more likely metal flow similar to "ghosting"

Just looked at all my dates for this period, and I've noticed the extra part linear circle on my 1883, in exactly the same place. Not on any of the others though.

I don't think it's an error. If you switch back and forward from obverse to reverse images on that 1892 eBay example (above), it looks as if it must be ghosting of the base of Victoria's bust - which is quite a heavy raised design at that point. It is in exactly that place. It could be that ALL examples - especially if they are all in the same place - are ghosting not errors.

I don't think it's an error. My 1877 appears to have two inner circles. I also noticed that there's an 1874 (new year in this variety?) in a VG grade coming up at the December London Coins auction (lot 2094). This is NOT mine, merely pointing it out.

Actually, I believe it's now been established that these are not "doubled linear circle", but ghosting of the bottom of Victoria's bust?

Another 1877 with an even more pronounced flaw (seller's pic)

Interesting that the 1 of the date appears to be above the inner line. I'll post better pictures when it arrives

Here it is, anyone any idea what's going on here? My guess is a clashed die with a repunched 1, but really I don't have a scooby do.

I dont think the 1 need be re-punched, providing the impression on the die was deeper than that of the die clash. An interesting coin though, I've not seen one as dramatic.
