i have a 1/2 crown dated 1845 and the reverse from the head is upside down when compared to the head.? is this the norm?

Welcome to the forums Haloc :)

Yes, that was the normal alignment at that time. I think it was not until the Jubilee 1887 series that they changed to en medaille, i.e. same side up.
