2008 UK Coin Set with the Old Design

Recommended Posts

Its not just the baby set, they also issued a 1p-£1 Brilliant Uncirculated set. The really irritating thing about that set is , that the blub that came with it said that because the new designs were being produced for 2008 that it would be the only coins issued using the old design. Need less to say the Royal Mint didn't know its Bottom from its Elbow.

Really. It works for me, I'm going to try after writing this.

(And I wrote this using the Edit)

What does it do exactly? Does it let you ammend text and then not submit it?

Yes, that's exactly it, Chris. I've tried both types of edit, equally unsuccessfully. When I click the relevant button to confirm my text amendments, a "loading" symbol briefly appears, then nothing.

Yes - that's what happens to me too, so I gave up with it. I'm using Safari 3 by the way, running OS X Tiger. (I'm prepared to make a small wager that your web designers don't bother testing for Safari :( )

I think the 700,000 figure is for coins issued into circulation. If you look at the figures the Royal Mints quotes on its web site for other years where none were issued into circulation then they don't quote a figure even if a hundred thousand or more were issued in uncirculated sets.

Anyway the rarest decimal coin issued into circulation is the 1992-3 Single Market 50p with just 109,000 coins. When available on ebay they trade for £15-20 each, so you don't want to be fooled by one out of an uncirculated set. I suppose its a rare case of a VF being worth more than a BU.

I don't understand the logic here at all. If a coin is scarce, it's scarce - doesn't matter whether it comes from circulation or a set. If it mattered that much I could buy a few sets up, extract the 50p's, carry them around in my pocket for a few months, and there's your currency coin. Note that the 1985 50p is only worth £5 in Spink and £2 in CCGB; and that's a scarce coin too. In fact, CCGB lists the 1993 50p at £5, which is long way from £20 (but I suppose there are lots of mugs on eBay).

Demand dictates price and not everything (not just coins) that is rare is in demand. It fascinating that the mule 20p hype caused so many people to suddenly think they wanted one that the prices went barmy! I see they are down around the £100 mark now.

The old design 2008 50p is a nice thing to have, especially in BU if it's difficult to find, but I shouldn't think it will ever make waves.

The next edition of Check Your Change will have massively overhauled decimal pricing in it. CCGB is not really about decimal and I must admit the decimal section has been neglected of late.

Well I've e mailed the Royal MInt via their contact us service, as follows:-
Hi,

I understand that the total mintage for the Britannia 50p, is only 700,000.

Are the Britannia 50p's in the 2008 baby set, included in that 700,000 figure, or are they a separate figure ?

If separate, how many baby sets have been produced ?

Thanks for your time.

I'll post the response on here (1 - 3 working days, they say)

Still waiting for a reply ~ so much for the 1 - 3 working days

When I'm done sorting everything out coinwise here (organising it all before it gets too much) I may have a few spare 2008 old design coins. When I know for sure I'll get a list here if case anybody is after some.

Incidentally, today at work me and the others managed to find the old design 2008 1p, 5p, 10p, 20p and £1! It's the 2p and 50p that are the real sods to find!

'Lo and behold I glanced into a work collegues change pot to find a 2008 50p and when turning it over expecting the shield I was greeted to Britannia!

They're out there, albeit very difficult to find!
