Hi all, hope you can help had a gardener recently digging my garden over and he found a coin upon cleaning it it is a rupee dated 1906 on one side it has the crown and one rupee india and the date, the other side is something i cannot find anywhere, it looks hand engraved of a temple and stamped on the bottom of the temple is the number 161903, i must say the engraving is awesome, can anyone shed any light on this coin please.

It may not surprise you that this is probably a temple token, although hardly my area. If you can post a photo, someone may be able to give you more info.

CL,

I think what you have is a 1906, One Rupee (British India), that has had the obverse milled down and a new inscription made in the Obverse of the coin. The Obverse should be that of King Edward VII. The Krause # is KM-508. The coin is Sterling Silver, and may have a mint mark under the crown on the reverse. Some issues do not have a mint mark.

I hope this helps.

Bob C.

Just £1 or so as scrap silver, unless you can find anyone that seriously collects Indian coins that have been engraved - and I suspect collectors of such are few and far between.

I stick with temple token. As I say, not my specialist area (it might just be someone's) but they do exist and it would seem logical to use demonetised coinage to form the basis of these tokens. If you have Sikh or Hindu neighbours, may be worth having a word with them as they may have been used in the neighbourhood at some time in the recent past. Would suggest you don't melt it as it does have historic interest.
