Error 1983 2p in even rarer Heinz packaging [SOLD]

I have one of the very rare 1983 error 'NEW PENCE' 2p's for sale, in unusual Heinz packaging, here:

Forum members can have it for £750.00. The last set I sold in the usual Martini guise, with an unevenly toned 2p went for £720.00.

No, nor have I!

It may not really be that significant what the packaging around the coin itself is, but someone somewhere will want it. It is a lot of money, but where can you find another one?

After hours of seaching I found it, but alas it's just the 'TWO PENCE" version!!

It does not appear that Michael has an actual Royal Mint set with the NEW PENCE version for sale as he notes that

"This is shown as an example ONLY of what the set with the error 2 pence coin looks like."

I was merely pointing out that it is also known to exist in the royal Mint issue, althought surely for a suitable financial inducement Michael could be persuaded to part with that set.

I am getting confused now. I always thought that this coin was found in a few Royal Mint Unc sets. Now it seems they are found in the Heinz set, the Martini set and possibly the Royal Mint Set. Can anybody say definitively where they are found?

The main source appears to be the Martini sets but it now appears that they also got into the Heinz and Royal Mint sets as well, possibly in smaller numbers

From experience having a 'Martini' set and selling it etc, and also having a normal 1983 BU set I can speak from experience....

The Martini set is exactly the same as the 1983 normal BU set. The only difference is that the Martini set includes a loose leaflet with it with the Martini logo and address etc (from memory). The actual set is exactly the same as the Normal BU 1983 year set with the Tower of London on the front (from memory again).

The Heniz set (I've still got it....was offered £600!) is packed entirely differently, with the Heinz logo splashed all over it etc.

I would like to confirm that I bought a 1983 Heinz pack (in original new condition) on 13 March with the 2 pence reading ‘NEW PENCE’. I thought that it might be rarer than the ‘Martini set’ with that coin as it was the first Heinz set that I had ever seen or heard about with the rare ‘NEW PENCE. I now have 2 Martini sets and 1 Heinz set with the NEW PENCE two pence, in them.

For ‘DaveG38’ I have never seen or heard of the error 2 pence having been found in the standard 1983 Royal Mint set. Estimates of how many of the error coins exist vary - I understand that about 15 to 20 Martini sets are known but it is possible that some of these error coins may now have been removed from their set packs. Until this month, the Heinz set I purchased was the first I had ever heard about with the error coin.

I see in earlier comments that ‘Gary D’ mentions that I (Michael Gouby/ Michael Coins) have a Royal Mint set (with the error 2p) listed on my website but that ‘Coppers’ correctly points out that I mention that the picture "is shown as an example ONLY of what the set with the error 2 pence coin looks like." Due to those comments I have now added on the website that the picture shown is of part of the ‘Martini set’ with the error 2 pence so that should clear up any future confusion.

The packaging of the 1983 Royal Mint and Martini sets have many differences.

The cover of the Royal Mint set is black with a centre picture of 8 Yeoman Warders of the Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London. The front of the Martini set is of a full cover picture of part of the Tower of London obscured by tree tops.

The inside left of the Royal Mint set has pictures of the new 1983 £1 coin, The former Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint at work on the master design for the reverse of the one pound coin and three £1 coins on top of each other so that the edge DECUS ET TUTAMEN can be seen. Text on ‘This uncirculated collection …..etc.

The inside cover of the Martini pack has 5 pictures on the ‘Striking coins at the Royal Mint’ plus text.

The centre page of the Royal Mint pack shows the reverse of the coins, on a black background. In the Martini pack the background is blue also of the reverse of the coins – as per my website.

The inside back cover of the Royal Mint set is of ‘The Striking Coins at the Royal Mint’ with 5 pictures (different to the pictures shown in the Martini pack) but text similar that that of the Martini pack. The inside back cover of the Martini pack is of ‘A brief history of the Royal Mint’, 2 pictures of old and new Mint with text. Bottom right has a boxed message ‘The Great British 1983 Coin Collection presented by (Logos of MARTINI & MR).

The back pages of both sets have information and pictures of the ‘Designs and Specifications’ of all of the 1983 coins – but both in a totally different layout.

Last point the 1983 Heinz set does not include the 1983 one pound coin !
