She won the Falklands War!

Actually before Argentina invaded it they were trying to figure out a way of cutting the costs, and really weren't bothered about the island at all, (that's if the realised they still had it).

But then strangely as the election was approaching, it made a good sense to Thatcher to have a war and win. War she had and win it she did, we got our island back, that most people had forgotten we'd even got in the first place.

Needless to say Thatcher managed to get in a second time riding on the wave of victory, (it's probably the same thing Blair tried to do with Iraq... kinda failed for him though, infact i'm surprised Blair hasn't given the Falklands away to the highest bidder).

Previous to the Falklands victory she had lost alot of her popularity and was predicted to lose the election.

As former Conservative Prime Minister Harold MacMillan stated, 'Thatcher sold the family silver', that is she sold this country's industry abroad to the highest bidder, which is exactly what she did.

Afterall Britain had got where it was up until that point because it had been the start of the Industrial Revolution, Britain was a strong producing economy, now it's a strong buying economy that buys things in from abraod, and shifts all the labour to China or India, where they work for peanut shells.

The best thing she ever did for us was lose at the election!

Margaret Thatcher never lost an election. She resigned while her government was in office in 1990; the Conservatives went on to win in 1992 under John Major and then lost in 1997.

The reason she resigned is that her own party realised she was a liability if they were going to win a further term of office, so they persuaded her to fall on her sword for the good of the party.

Correct.

She hasn't done the best thing for us yet, but give it ten years and she'll be pushing up daises.

Mind you they (the IRA) nearly got her in 1984, but she went to the bathroom.

Sorry to bump this ancient thread, but given all the things that have happened recently, would anybody welcome Tony Blair having a second crack at PM. He seems keen to get involved again?

Better than Cobie but both are waynekers. Surely labour can do better.May will sail this one.

So many spin doctors.Blair sacrificed himself with war and I certainly wouldn't want Cobie.Blair dips into Sherry....Hat off.

I thought Corbyn was impressive last night. Much better than I thought he would be. May was her usual self.

For me, the poor showing was from Paxman who is a shadow of his former self.

As you say though, Peter, they're all lying wankers. Wouldn't trust any of them. Also why do ukip choose leaders who seem vaguely like comic cuts characters? First Farage, now Nuttall.

Corbyn is sincere, that I believe. His problem is that he stands for a lot of things that the rest of us don't.

It looks like they will ease the pressure on education by dropping numeracy standards from the curriculum.

Anyway, all this hot air over whether one side or the other will do this or that is irrelevant. Ultimately this country needs a political party that unashamedly promotes indigenous industry and/or services that can be exported. All the public services that everybody is anxious to preserve or promote are luxuries. Luxuries, the continuous provision of which has to be funded sustainably by a continuous supply of earned money, not one off tax grabs on 'the rich' which simply denudes the country of investable reserves. I wish those people could see and embrace the benefits of profitable business, but wealth creation is anathema to a significant part of the political spectrum. Better stop before I get heated.

Or to put it another way, socialists are very good at spending other people's money.

Blair is the slimiest piece of detritus to float away from Westminster in living memory. I'd rather have syphilis back than him......

Is he anybody's favourite guy? If so who is this idiot? There surely can't be more than one.

The only one who comes to mind is George Bush junior. Favourite poodle, leastways.

Good point. I'd forgotten about him. However, the description is an apt one.
