1976 Machin Sovereign

Taken with a mixture of incident and axial lighting, this time.

I have been looking for a "wide gap" 1888 florin for a while, and finally got one today.

Quite a bargain, too, as it cost less than what I paid for the much more common "narrow gap" variety 2 years ago (shown below for comparison).

That's a really nice obverse on that one.  Mainly I'm into sovs, but getting any Jubilee Vic coin where she doesn't look like a kewpie doll is a win.

Is that the gap below the bust? That's the only difference I can see.

Yes, there are two varieties of 1888 florin obverse: ESC 2955 with the large gap below the bust (same as the 1887 obverse) and ESC 2956 with the narrow gap (same as 1889-1892). The bottom of the veil is also slightly different.

There are tooth alignment differences too - look for example where the ‘A’s are pointing. Has anyone counted the teeth?

I thought it was the gap between the 8s.

Apart from the size of the gap below the bust and the bottom of the veil, the position of DEI GRATIA is different and the nose, mouth, chin and neck are different:

I haven't counted the teeth around the edge (yet!).

It looks as though everything except VICTORIA has been rotated a little either clockwise or anti-c.

1872 Sovereign

Axial lighting, but with a less diffuse source.  Looks rather more crisp and less flat.

Can I appeal to you more experienced collectors for HELP please?  does anyone know much about Guineas from this period?  could you tell me from your experience if it is normal for the weight to be under?  Obviously it may be a fake so I will test the gold is 22ct?  did the assays at this time show much variation in the quality of the gold used ? would you say it is about fine it seems so hard to judge these early milled ?

It looks like it may be an ex mount coin to me?

It would be a fraction underweight on account of its wear, but not significantly so. What weight is it?

Picked up this little number up from the Baldwins auction this week. A departure from my usual copper and bronze, but I have been picking up a few of the William III sixpences of late, with this one added now. Some really nice lustre on the reverse, and pics don't really do the coin justice. First attempt at uploading images on here, so forgive me if they are are a bit wonky.
