Coin aquisition of the week.......

Recommended Posts

That’d be about right…’Coin Acquisition of the Week’ lays dormant for nearly a week…post an acquisition…and within two hours it’s buried by the Penny boys! 😂😂😂

You were obviously first to spot it. I wonder what would have happened if the seller had made it an auction? Well done anyway.

I sold one just like it a few years ago.... alarmingly alike in fact.

Images would be very welcome if you can find them? This one weighs right, looks right, and also rings right :)

I'll have to hunt them out, I imagine it's just me memory being a bit iffy as I sold it a few years ago, one of a pair I found in a field :) The BM disclaimed them, have changed computers about 4 times if not more since though, so images are possibly lost. I don't doubt yours is correct!

EDIT to add an image and show just how iffy memory gets after 10 years or so lol :) Yours is nicer but I got more for mine :D

I have to say, though, if my coin, in the light of your upcoming evidence, had turned out to be fake (I double-checked mine after your initial post), I would’ve sold up and changed hobbies. One or two significant differences between the two examples, thank goodness :)

Not an easy find in collectable grade, they always seem to fly in auction, so really pleased with this bargain in a nice dark collectors’ tone!

I normally collect silver, but have decided to buy a couple of pennies as type examples.

Wow, very nice presentation of an unappreciated (IMHO) date - it almost has a specimen appearance.

I've had this coin for a while but I do not think I have posted it on this forum.

A rather nice 1921 half crown which is IMO close to UNC and a well minted example for 1921.

A very well struck obverse for the 1921!

Pretty scarce in that condition - alongside 1920 and 1924, and possibly scarcer than 1926, in high grade.

i Know early 20s were tough for condition, 1923 bucked the trend for this. What's the reason for 1924 coming a lot tougher?

One reason is that mintages for large silver got much lower from 1924-26 as the Depression took hold and demand reduced. In my own experience 1922 isn't as difficult as 1920 and 1921 but I don't know why, and my experience may not be general.

Don't forget that the 1925 half crown is the rarest of the series.

But only in high grade. Don't forget that there were 4000 low grade 1925s in a Noble sale 12 or 13 years ago with only one example worth lotting as a single. I presume most of those got melted, as there's no way you could shift that many, even on ebay.
