Coin aquisition of the week.......

Another coin from my collection, A reasonably struck 1912 florin. The lion's face on the upper shield are weak but the pearls around the edge on the reverse are all well struck. Apart from some bag marks on the obverse overall a good coin IMO in the MS range although this series is hard to grade due to strike issues.

I tend to focus more on the obverse which appears lovely on your coin Sir. A couple of bag marks but the strike on obverse very nice.

My new circulation 1953 2+A farthing arrived.

It's been a very long time since I added a new farthing to my collection, that's for sure.

Many thanks again to @PWA 1967 for pointing me in the direction of this one.

I only buy the 1920 Florin Dave and no other years ,they are really hard to find.

Sounds a bit daft but do the same with some other denominations but only certain years.

Like the 1934 ( i bought one this week ) and 1944 pennies i always buy if they are really nice.

George v florins in high grade are as you say hard to find although the .925 silver issues in GVF are common. I suspect when they changed to ,500 silver people held on to the sterling silver issues. I think I have shown this one before but it's the best 1920 florin I have although I do have a NGS AU 58 that IMO is not as good as the first coin. Your 1920 florin is a very nice example.

Happy with this new (to me) 1813 contemporary counterfeit. Of the 1s6d second bust only 1814 is common and I've never seen an 1815...1813_counterfeit_1s6d.thumb.jpg.ffc1137a2c572f58731c514568b08e7e.jpg

Some years back I managed to find an 1816 3 shillings bank issue cont counterfeit which I have enjoyed mostly because the real one is hard to find

I've seen five copies of the 1816 3/- counterfeit. All with the same die pair. I would like to find a better example at some point

Quite extraordinary that it circulated long enough for the silver coating to wear off completely yet was still accepted presumably.

It's not uncommon for the silver washed coins to be without most of the original coating. However, many counterfeits are quite worn, and I guess they must have circulated as small change for a while as there were often lack of copper coins in the early 19Ct - Here's my other three 1816 counterfeits. The first with a little silvering left 3s_bank-token-1816.thumb.jpg.ad1fd0c802ad9422791faa94684738d6.jpg

I enjoy collecting them they show the ingenuity of the the criminal element , , Earlier period but there is an interesting book called "Newton and the counterfeiter"  I read some years ago when going down my own very particular rabbit hole into my own strange "wonderland" when I kept seeing things that were not there in coins.

Yes, I have that one on the shelf too, along with ‘Clip a bright Guinea’ and some others. Ken Peters made some groundbreaking works on the British counterfeits, particularly the bibliography ‘Counterfeit Coins of England and the United Kingdom’ is a good place to start.

Yes, it covers all periods. Mine is the 2008 edit - I don't remember if there's a second edition, or if that was of his other book 'The Counterfeit Coin Story'.

Thanks!
It's been a while, as I haven't had much time for my coin collection. eBay which used to have new counterfeit coins each week, now rarely have anything of interest. Wonder if the material has dried up or the coins are going elsewhere? Of course, it's becoming increasing difficult for me to find new stuff as the collection grows, but I feel it's not the main cause - the coins are simply no longer there in the same number as previous...

also it becomes more difficult on ebay as the word counterfeit or Contemporary copy hits the alarm filter maybe.  I also dont seem to have seen too many lately

I’m not sure but it appears to me that it has been increasingly difficult for new sellers to open accounts on eBay. That may have resulted in smalltime sellers to go elsewhere – like Facebook. Or it may simply be that much of the oddball material have been sucked up and now resides in collections like yours and mine...

My latest acquisition arrived today a 1929 PCGS MS62. While a common coin this one is a pleasing example with the thistle on the reverse well struck with the base  of the thistle showing the detail a feature often missing on even high grade coins.

yes the new rules do seem pretty strict and one mistake can easily lead to closure of the account
