That's a very strange one! If it's artificial lustre, then it's mostly worn away in a natural fashion. Which means - if it was artificially done - then the penny must have circulated after it was lustred. However, they ceased to be legal tender in 1971 and even by then, a 1900 penny wasn't worth very much. That begs the question, why bother?

My own feeling is that the state of wear is VF but with considerable remaining (fairly convincing) lustre. So could this perhaps  have been a weak strike and the lustre is original?

One thing's for certain - UNC it ain't!!

[Adopts tone of voice of the railway bore you dread sitting next to you...] Ah well you see, it's quite easy to tell. I can see from the riffle squod mark that the bullet was made in the North Croydon Works of the Machine Arms Co and they only made them with that particular riffle squod up to 17th August 1914 and the entire consignment apart from one case was used before November 1914 in the Belgian trenches on the Western Front - the one case was used in 1915 but only at Gallipoli so if I was a betting man I'd feel my money was safe in saying that is a 1914 bullet. As I was saying to my friend Roger only last Tuesday - and there's no-one knows more than Roger about riffle... [cont p.94]

I'm enjoying imagining what the accompanying cartoon in Private Eye would look like......

That looks exactly like one I had come in this week- I really studied it and did several tests, and I'm convinced it's copper-plated.

Fake siege piece. I've posted this guy up before. He makes his own stuff using precious metal clay then lists them as "Finds"

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Scarborough-Silver-Siege-Piece-Coin-Hammered-Metal-Detecting-medieval-saxon/183585451386

And what are the chances of him having two ?

If he can have a medieval Saxon Scarborough siege piece, I want his Tardis which would unquestionably be authentic

Not a very subtle forger!

I've reported each individually and await with baited breath to see if Ebay have the gumption to pull them.

Yes, I thought that - looks like they've been constructed to deceive.

Here's the conversation so far:

Hi there.
Is this a genuinely found piece? It looks cast.

It's definitely not cast,it has been stamped or hammered.
Oh right- but is it a genuinely found piece?

Hi yes it was originally found years ago

Weird experience on e bay just now. Did a late snipe bid with just 5 seconds (apparently) left on the clock in the "confirm bid" box. Time ran out on there, but found time was still running when the page switched to the display only, saying I was the high bidder. Several seconds after that before the time there ran out and confirmed me as the winner. Looking at the bid history, there was one bid after mine, but too low.

The auction end time was 23:09:59 - I bid when 5 seconds were left - and found on the bid history that I actually bid at 23:09:34. Should have been 23:09:54.

Also noticed that the countdown clock was going slightly awry by jumping forward by a second every now and then, rather than back. Must have lost 2 seconds every time it did so.

I find the phone app is a nightmare for this, and often reports to me that I didn't win, when in fact I did, before it sends me notifications to pay.

Most confusing, but fortunately I haven't missed much. Actually forgetting to keep an eye on things I really want is more of a problem ;)

Mike, a lot of bidders see that type of thing while watching, and making last second bids on ebay. Research has shown it is caused by too much wine! LOL...

Ha, Ha - but actually not so on this occasion, Bob. No, something was definitely wrong with the clock. Bid history is below. Why would the other late bidder make a lower bid than mine with one second to go, when the confirm box shows the latest bids coming in?

My bid was supposedly 25 seconds before the close, easily enough time for the other bidder to adjust their amount bid, or decide not to bid.

Because he didn't know your bid. Your bid would have beaten the previous £12, and show £13 as the current bid. So they sniped at £18.50, but this wasn't enough to beat your earlier bid, so you win at £18.50 + 1.

The only way that could have happened is if the bidder didn't notice what the latest high bid was. True, he may not have refreshed the main page, but the confirm bid box always shows the latest high bid, as well as new bids coming in, in real time, as they arise.
