That is the point of saleroom notices. It is very easy to make a mistake when cataloguing, and equally difficult to proof read, particularly on multiple lots. Let them know, and they will correct it. It doesn't serve any auctioneer to give a misleading description, as they will only get the coin returned.

He is now waiting for my response before deciding to report me to eBay for "aggressive" emails. What a plonker! Declan, since you also sent him messages, have you received any reply like this? I feel I must 'bite my lip' before responding to him, if at all.

Haha.......i received 2 messages so i am more popular!! I think the words     " threatening", " aggressive"   "honest"  "report" and "ebay" amongst others were mentioned.  So he has been busy. Though why the words....its a fake...and another...and another annoyed him so much i,ve no idea.  I did reply back to him and ask why he felt the need to send me these messages.  After all all i was only answering his question of "What is this?" and asked him if it was supposed to be some guessing game for naive customers. Never received a reply.

He must have a bundle of them!! I would imagine some buyers would know they were fake and bought them as filler coin for their collection. The other buyers....well they ought to know better. At the very least you would think they would look at his other items for sale and realise they have been duped. But obviously not as he still has 100% positive feedback. Strange. I wonder how much he pays for these?

You know the most worrying thing of all. This now the norm for fakebay . I see a less than rosey future if they don't do something to police their site. And despite the buyer guarantee spiel it's going through that process that takes an age. The why do I have to wait a month for my money the seller closed his account ? why are you trying to contact him? he doesn't exist. Even if you phone to speak to someone they have a bot on every call trained to answer every question except the one you're asking. With the inevitable do you wish to return to the menu? You can contact us via the help section bla bla bla. run by doogooders who have jack to do with bloody paypal lol

Short answer, no. But at the start of  September I spotted that a lot of my sellers fees were out of scale. Messages sent to and fro, they know that I know. Still they overcharged me for September but reassure me that it is "being looked at".
This from over a month ago " ........Fee for the listings and can confirm that, it is an issue known on site which has affected some of our sellers. You need not to worry for this, we have escalated this issue to our specialised team and they are looking into this on priority basis. I'm sure that it will be resolved soon for our genuine members like you and you will get the correct invoice (or credit) for the same."

Not holding my breath on this one.

Hats of too you guys for confronting these idiots. I don't have the patience to converse with them anymore. 

The unit price on those must be cheap to be able to sell them on at 99p. Probably getting them in bulk from Alibaba. I find the best way to get your money back with ebay is to instigate a return under item does seem authentic. Weigh and photograph the coin and collect proof of a proper weight coin to show as an example. The sellers usually back down immediately if confronted with viable evidence. On the odd occasion I've hit a problem and spoke direct with eBay they have listened and acted accordingly on my behalf. It could be down to the years I've been buying on ebay though that they are so helpful. Completely agree though that the refund process can be drawn out by awkward sellers.

I bought a couple of crappy coins from e-bay as gap fillers last year sometime...  a victorian farthing and an earlier george one. I have bought 100s of coins from ebay in the past and never expect the grades to be quite as advertised. The victorian one was advertised as EF. The picture was very blurry and all I could tell was that it was shiny. I didn't expect it to be EF at all and I won the auction for about 4 quid including delivery. I did however expect it to be nearly fine or VG maybe... or even poor. I didn't care about the george one which was really worn but the date showed. When it arrived it looked as though it had been cleaned with a sander or a file or something. Maybe put under shoe and skidded on down the high street. It was shiny because it had been polished but had lots of wear and had huge violent scratches and gouges all over it - none of which were visible on the blurry photo.  . 

I was in a bad mood that day and only gave the guy about 1 star for product description on the feedback - I have only ever given non positive feedback about twice ever. I never give bad rep usually but I was annoyed. He sent me a snotty note about giving him neg feedback and how I was an idiot to expect a EF coin for the price and he was not happy about my rating of his sale over just £4.00. I calmly told him that the term EF has a specific meaning with coins and collectors but maybe I had been hasty in giving him neg feedback if he didn't know what he was talking about. He accused me of dishonesty regarding the condition saying it was at least VF when it left his place. He was the one selling a worn out coin polished up with a scourer with blurry photo and calling it an EF grade so he shouldn't talk about dishonesty. I never usually give bad feedback, even if the coins is crap...  and the bloke was right that the coin was very cheap. I wouldn't have minded if he hadn't offered an estimated grade and it turned up worse than the pic, or if the coin was just polished and nearly a fine grade, but his claim of EF annoyed me. The huge scratches and the massive wear were so blatant and ugly and did not show up at all in the photo and no one in there right mind would describe the coin as so.    

Normally I have very good experiences when buying old coins from e-bay. Sometimes there are some real shockers though as you guys have shown here.

Don't worry about it. It is what ebay is all about. I pointed out to a seller of 'high grade' coins that were obscured with image manipulation that he was a bit wide of the mark and gave a comparison to back up the argument - so he left me a neg (in the good old days when both parties were allowed to call a spade a spade).

Quick quiz. Guess which of the below was the high grade coin I questioned? Clue - it wasn't VF or better.

Don't say the left one, lol. Yeah, if he said 'high grade' he can argue he didn't give an actual coin grade I suppose. Although I would take high grade to be VF or better..  I do not know what that really means. 

I am a little unsure about grading older coins from 1600s to 1700s. Is there more leeway with the amount of wear due to age?

Leeway doesn't come into it. Wear is wear, whether it happened a year ago or a millennium ago is irrelevant. Leeway is wishful thinking on the part of the owner. All people have to do is accept that there are coins which don't make unc and be happy with them. It's not difficult really. None of the three I posted alongside were uncs, VF, nEF and a decent EF was the best I could go to.

This is the penny that was sold by Heritage last year for £150K - this guy needs reporting !!!
