1573 SIXPENCE

Recommended Posts

Hi all I have just scanned in a couple of coins from my collection that I bought a while back from a local dealer who mostly specialises in antiques, buttons, postcards etc...

Anyway one of them is this Elizabeth sixpence. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more with perhaps a Spink reference no. plus if you could give me a grade that would be great. My scanner is not of the best quality and it does look a little nicer in hand. Thanks.

I think this coin is the larger bust type of sixpence, third issue. With the acorn mintmark, and going off others for sale on the internet I would grade it as VF anyone agree, or disagree?

Hammered are hard to grade ...you can get as struck which only merit F prices.

Your coin is well centred and fairly attractive and unclipped.

Lizzies bust wears quickly (Dirty old Sir Walter).

What did you pay for it?

£50 for the Liz and £80 for the Henry VIII.

I bought them about 3 months ago.

The Lizzie is a good buy...I haven't seen the Henry V111.

I'm basically after a good example of various monarchs and denominations.

Of course we all get carried away when we purchase our 50th Edward 1d....but that is the allure of coins especially hammered.

When I go to a fair and see an attractive coin it is like love at first sight...eye appeal every time.

I totaly agree, I don't know much about hammered but when my local dealer offered them to me I felt I had to buy becouse I found them quite attractive.

Here is the Henry VIII groat.

The detail on the scan isn't great. In hand you can actually see all the different strands of his hair.

I should stick with your dealer.

Someone at the bottom of the line is losing out.
