1922 Penny, Reverse of 27

Recommended Posts

Hi can anyone please tell me what the differences are between a normal 1922 Penny reverse, and the ones with 1927 reverses?

The bust was modified in 1926. These muled coins therefore have the earlier bust type with a normal 1927 reverse. The most obvious change (but only on higher quality coins) is the shifting of the designer's initials (BM) from the 'middle' of the edge of the neck to the right hand side.

1920 1927

Full photos are available on Andy's site (Online and search for cointype "Pennies" with dates between 1920 and 1930 and with the gallery option checked ).

(Sorry for nicking the images Andy, but they are such great coins!)

The 1922 reverse has the shield closer to the border than the 1927 reverse.

Additionally and simplest, on the reverse of 1922, the center trident tine touches a border tooth.... On the reverse of 1927, the central trident tine is below the border tooth...

see attached images....

Thanks everyone. So are these the differences that I am looking for when searching through 1922 pennys for the Extremly Rare type?

Guest E. Dawson

Hey, how about just looking at the more pronounced edge beading on the 1927 types? I want to see a mint state specimen of these "hybrids" as all those coming up for sale in recent years that I have seen are in the VG to Fine or worse levels. The specimen version must be worth quite a bit these days & would hate to see the auction results.
