"which was the last pre-decimal coin to be withdrawn from circulation, finally

ceasing to be legal tender in 1993"

My guess would be the "florin" aka the 10p

The double florin (4/-) issued between 1887 and 1890 has never been demonetised and therefore is still legal tender. Theoretically it could be spent today in a shop at face value of 20 pence, though having a value to collectors of many times this, you would be a fool to do so and you would probably get a strange look. Your question is therefore not valid.

It was the 10p, but only because the coin was made smaller and all larger 10p's/Florins were therefore demonetized.

Rob is right about the double florin too.

Though I'll pass on educating our quizmaster on the 4/- bit.

Incidently whilst I'm on this monetary forum, I used to have a

"Threepenny bit" that had been made up from 2 coins, one being given a female thread, the other a male. Only perceptible by the slight mis-alignment of the sides. Probably in someones collection now.
