Diese Firma, heute in Röthenbach a. d.

Balmberger Münz-Prägeanstalt Vereinsabzeichenfabrik" erstrahlt in neuem Glanz.

that's a better picture of the whole building .  I just thought it interesting that it is all we have left of the story apart from the coins.  Yes I also have not been yet but will do sometime soon as you say it is a beautiful part of the world.  Nice to paint I am sure

I suppose we should talk a little about the distribution method other than the boxes.  Rogers makes reference to a supplier , whether wholesale or to the public ?  presumably someone must have been charged with selling distributing them and more importantly marketing them.  I have found as I mentioned small bags with 50 or so coins of the same denomination both in this country and in the US.  Of course we cannot know how they arrived  in those places .  But one unusual find was 56  of a previously unknown baby head 25 pesetas which was never inside any sets I have found of the Spanish type  I am very much hoping that the German expert G Ashoff may know some more about the spanish sets.  I kept about 8 but sold the rest to raise funds for MADaboutART ...seemed silly to keep so many

Other side - I have always held the view that these early 1840-1860 pieces were Lauers work pproduced at around the same time that the to hanover tokens were made on mass there are many many different varieties , i strongly suspect they were used on board games in early victorian times and just outlasted the board games which just  wore out after a time .

It was so nice to find a signed example that proves lauer were involved in their production at last.

possibly although Lauer did focus on a few coins that were well out of date by the time they were made.  The George III crown was still in circulation a lot and less so the victorian Crown apparently so he included that in the 1880's sets.  The spanish ones are also very confused.  But certainly I hope I might learn something from this book by Aschoff on the longer Lauer Tradition and dates of these spiel marks

I now have contact with Gunter Aschoff who wrote the German equivalent to Rogers and the conversation between us is going nicely.  I will paste in his thoughts and hos interesting news of a potential new book from a swiss collector who he sold his entire collection to .  Exciting news I think

Hello Larry,

I've always collected coins and eventually started collecting childrens coins . When, after 30 years of collecting, I had a lot of coins, I put them together in a catalogue. "Deutsches Kinderspielgeld° coins, bills and cans. Published in 2008 (Battenberg). When there was no longer any demand after a few years, the publisher stopped production and the book is no longer available. A large collector from Switzerland then later ( 2022) bought my complete collection. He now wants to combine his and my collection and digitally distribute a new catalog with further findings. That should happen in a few weeks. It might be good for you to wait for this print. But maybe I can do it for you too nor send my catalog digitally.

Balmberger and Lauer are described in great detail in the catalogue. Lauer has not coined for all European countries. As far as I know, there were 12 countries, and he coined a particularly large number for the English kingdom. You can find this information in detail in the catalogues.

Gunter Aschoff.

Viersen is located on the Niederhein near Düsseldorf (30km or Cologne 60km away)

Gunter Aschoff has very kindly sent me a PDF copy of the book and I have skimmed over its 324 pages and if has done a great deal of work on the German toy money and he had the most fantastic collection of boxes for toy money which must have taken him years to acquire.  Apart from one mention of the coins by D and Co and passing references to the variety of the european coinage including our own by Lauer and others there is nothing in his catalogue .  I will will ask him if he collected them but dd not write on the subject.  I will try translate any of the references made to the manufacturers and the history with his permission.  It may be that the collector in Switzerland intends a broader approach .  The work by Mr Aschoff  extends the few pages on German Toy money issues by several hundred pages when compared to Rogers.  Sadly it is out of print but as a reference to anyone researching that branch is an essential read.  I will keep you posted .

I have written to him to ask about the Round box with the harpy and scene of Nurnberg which I showed .  It is his belief that the box was constructed in 1931 so I have asked if the contents I showed may not be the original ones

it is nice to have a wealth of  research , the boxes alone in his book fill  18 pages with up to 8 on one page .....so this is a great deal more than Rogers.

Hello Larry, you have great pieces!

Regarding age: I believe that the age of coins and cans can only be determined if they are almost unused. In everyday play, cans will also have been filled with foreign coins. Merchants, vendors and children also liked to mix the content so that it was easier to sell and play again.

Coins were sometimes found in my cans, especially with Lauer and Balmberger.

But be careful: the companies even helped out with deliveries! See catalog text at Lauer, Balmberge and Arld.

Have a beautiful Sunday,

Gunter.

here is his reply on box #41 in his catalogue ...the word box seems to always translate as "can "

there are about 30 of each +/- 5  so may well have been part of an educational set ...none of the other denominations

I am not sure ( may be a clue) why the titles FID DEF IND INR are used were they ? for use in INDIA ? INR the monetary prefix for the rupee
