Its funny a short while back I remember Mike showing us his new found f164 and saying just how hard it is to find one above EF , and I must admit I was thinking at the time that my own example was only about VF, then low a behold this turns up .  A few bag marks , but for £23 .

Very nice, Terry, and what a bargain. Have you got a pic of the reverse as well?

I thought for a minute that you were showing an f164a, then i realised that it was not one. Damn, that would be a great find.

My F164a was on here posted some years back,  it was better than my F164 until this latest find.

There's a nice F164 lurking in lot 646 at the forthcoming DNW sale. ;)

In grades EF+ I would have thought that it must be about fifty times rarer than than the commoner Freeman 166. Finding a BU example would be challenging !

I remember these 1908 varieties when they were in circulation the 164 & 168 were of similar abundance in low grade, about three to one, funny that.

Not for me Mike, the penny lots at DNW soar way beyond both estimate and budget.

And If I was, I'd not be telling everyone.

Glad I've already got one, Terry.

I've seen it evidenced a few times just how well read this forum is by non members (and probably members who never post).

Not to mention those eye wateringly huge buyer premiums.

By a country mile the best I've seen. None of the known others better than (at best) NVF, and most sub fine.

That's a 164, Jon. We'd just changed the narrative slightly to the 164A.

Ah that one. I must admit I've never looked at it before. Yes that is a very nice specimen and now takes first place of the ones I've seen.

ETA: the obverse side anyway.

Thanks Pete. It's here

It's the type of photo that isn't easy to download and upload unless you can cope with a small image, so I've linked directly to the post. Obviously you then click on the image to enlarge it.

No, that one had escaped my attention, Terry. As for a perfect one........probably not, but you just never know.

Coincidentally,  I have recently submitted it to NGC for conservation (along with another coin) and am awaiting its return.

Hopefully it will arrive within a month or so...
