Charles II 1673 crown edge inscription - second I/O in VICESIMO ?

Recommended Posts

On this 1673 crown, it looks very much like the I on the edge die (?) was punched over an O. Would you agree, or do you think this effect is caused by fatigue ? I don't really know how the edge inscription was  applied to these coins - information would be much appreciated as a casual Google hasn't lead me anywhere.

This is documented and is ESC 392 (47B) in the latest revision by Maurice Bull. I have an example in stock too.

The edge was applied using the Castaing edging machine, where the blank was rolled on its edge.
