Depends on what you want to photograph I guess. My current compact is a cannon sureshot sx700hs brought a few years back. It is a very good holiday camera and comes with a 30X zoom and optical image stabilisation.  Hence I can use max zoom without tripod. The lower zoom versions will be around £150. But I am not certain if it is any good in photographing coins though.

150 will get you something that is literally half decent. Go up to between 200 and 250 & you should be able to pick up one of the older Lumix TZ cameras, which give pretty good results for a small sensor camera.

On the other hand, if you've  a decent smartphone from the past few years, you will already have  a more than half decent camera.

did have a lumix and I wasn't that happy with it but now after looking around seems it was a half decent camera,   I havnt gone over to a smart phone yet, my job see's me sat in front of 5 pc's at work so I don't want to be staring at a screen out of work time

I replaced my old Lumix with a new Lumix DMC-FZ1000 but that's hardly a compact.
After some research the middle of the road Canon SX620 HS seemed to be the best pocket camera around a hundred quid and has been good so far.

Seems to be £160 now, just about everywhere.

I paid £149 for mine so, yes, a little over a hundred quid. 🙄
