"Milled" Liz Auction Descriptions

Recommended Posts

At the DNW this week I noticed that milled Elizabeth I coins were described as, for example, "contemporary with Second hammered issue" - no longer any mention of the word 'milled' at all.

This may have been the customary auction/dealer description for a while, and I have only just noticed, but can anyone shed any light on why the change?

I assume because that section was called 'Milled Coins of Elizabeth I from the Collection formed by Walter Wilkinson'. i.e. all were milled, so use of the word was superfluous. In other sections they were referred to as milled coinage to differentiate from the hammered issues.
