Is this PVC damage?

Recommended Posts

I inherited part of my great grandfathers collection, mainly circulating coins from 1920-1967. Nearly everything had been stored in small plastic wallets, which I'm guessing contained PVC. Some have this sort of discolouration and many coins have a sticky/tacky feel to them. Is this likely caused by PVC or something else?

Also, I've been removing the coins from their old plastic wallets and putting them in new plastic (hopefully PVC free) album pages from Schulz. Will the coins continue to degrade in the new housing?

Those plastic wallets are known to cause coin damage and are therefore unsuitable for storage.

It's amazing how frequently they are still used though. Most commonly for transit of coins from seller to buyer.

I would give them a gentle wash (not clean) before putting them in any new album. Warm soapy water and a soft sponge works for me. If the sticky residue is particularly resilient I use a surgical spirit dip with a little detergent mixed in. This also works very well for sticky tape residue.

I would not use anything stronger or attempt to scrub the coins clean.

Acetone is just the job for removing the green.

Thank you for the help everyone. I'll try giving them a light wash and maybe acetone on the green stuff.

These are the new albums and plastic pages I've used to store them in. They shouldn't contain any PVC should they?

It doesn't say in the product specification, so you have to assume the worst. Amazon will sell anything that people pay to list. PVC sleeves might be a no-no, but plasticisers of any type will leach out and leave a sticky residue. The key is to have an inert material with no added plasticiser.

Go to a proper coin dealer with your requirements and ask questions before spending money.

Hello chaps! This is my first posting on here.

I agree with Rob, these SCHULZ album pages are almost sure to contain PVC.  If it doesn't say "inert" anywhere ...then assume they will contain PVC.                                                                       I'm really surprised tho' that none of you regular guys have advised that you can buy inert coin envelopes here on this website , developed by Predecimal.

They'll be small enough to fit into some of the sleeve pockets in the album you bought.

I bought a couple of packs and they're excellent and obviously just the job for long term storage 😉

I hope this helps you Lotad.
