1863 OPEN 3

Recommended Posts

That conversation about the open 3 in the 1863 I wonder if anyone else has one so I might compare with mine.  I am interested in details of the area above the three, and the structure of the upper part of the three.  I will post mine for comparison I thought I might sell one for the charity and likely put it on ebay as an auction.  But before I do I would like to make a brief study of the type.  Thanks

If the coin is problem free and the money going to charity especially a kids one dont bother with ebay.

I will pay you more than you will get on there or any auction come to that.

PM me at any time should you wish to.

Pete.

it is this overlapping of the 3 over another ?3 that intrigues me I will see if I can capture it on a picture

so when I started looking at this scar I began to realise that the better example which does not have the scar per se does have something in the exact same place

of course the easiest explanation is that this is just a scratch across the top the fact that the second example has a dent/scar removed maybe simply the result of the bar often getting damaged because of where and what it is but it does seem strange that the alignment is the same and seemingly related to the two areas of metal that peep out of the top of the 3 .....anyone who has one might like to take a look and see if theirs also has these features...please.  Thanks I just think that it may explain this strange little creature I also think it might be important in understanding the 1865 over 3 which seems to come in a variety of overpunches and removals.  Most seem to be connected to the open 3 in all the examples six examples I have.

I believe some of these are 3/2 you can even see the very very faint scar lines and the break in the back of the three where the bottom foot of the 2 would run and all have an extended edge outside the bottom edge of the 3's curve here is a better example of what I mean and have suggested this on many a thread. Picture is blown up from a past sale I missed but I believe this is irrefutable evidence that such an overstike exists I made a drawing error such is the uselessness of a mouse when freehand tracing lol the 2 should out above the 3 but you can see where I meant by the normal picture :)

ok thanks that is helpful to know ....Here are the various types of 65 over 3 some seem to be very very different from each other others even the plain 65 seem to show some features having been removed .....surely they could not all have been taken from 63's

i know the top two are mostly 5's but there are a couple of pregnant bulges on the edge right and in the upper section of the round. on the fourth one you can see a line that seems to correspond to the scar on the open 3

oh well not much of an opinion out there on that one ./.......that is why the bottom is falling out of the penny you old boys are too busy putting up pictures of semi-naked models ...it's turning into a greasemonkey garage wall rather than concentrating on coins

number 2 is definitely a 3  a 5 wouldn't curve up at that top left edge plus the back of the 3 is top right and scaring from the downstroke. The differences between some are i would imagine where the repunch was set as in high / low tilted clockwise or anticlockwise?:D

I have not got it to hand but Satin from memory has about seven or eight varieties (i think) of 1865/3.

Definately quite a few :)

I never thought to look in Gouby maybe not seven :) and gouby has five .

Well, if you will post topics with titles like "Is the bottom dropping out of the Penny market" what else do you expect!

Although in fairness, it was Richard who posted that topic.

The Gouby penny book for anyone looking at pennies is definately one to consider if not a must have.

Probably most of the ones you are looking at have been studied by all the people who contributed to it ,so although your opinion may differ it has just about everything that has been found up untill it was published. The £50 may be well spent and i would definately recommend it before buying a coin.

yes is that the one in the Blue folder I have found this useful.  It would be great to have better pictures but I think that would have to come in the form of an electronic book at some point in the future.

No i think your getting mistaken with the cheaper one.

The British bronze penny........Specialised edition ,all the pictures are in colour and a lot more in depth than the one you may be thinking of.

If you go on the Michael coins website you will see the picture and description £50.

Pete.
