1861 BUNHEAD ID'S

Recommended Posts

I bid on a lot of lower grade 1860,61 and 74 bunheads on ebay ,in the hope that I can pick up some of the variations I don't have on the cheap . As expected , I normally pick up a lot of the commoner ones (that I already have ) .3 of my latest ones are ,I think are F24, F28 and F32 .Although I am unsure of the F28 ,its corroded and Its maybe a bit of wishful thinking . I am normally quite confident of working out the combinations , but getting 3 scarcer ones in one go has got me second guessing .

Hi Mick. The one you have as F24 looks to me like an F27   4+d

The F32  looks like an F33   6+d

And the F28 is really bad but I would guess an  F36   6+g.     Terry

F27 would be a hell of a find - think you meant to type F22.

I thought you had the numbers wrong . I went with the die combinations . I have an F22 AND 33 ,didn't have a F29 .Freemans, although very informative , can be a bit of a puzzle sometimes .

1861 die combinations can be very tricky, Mick. I've been trying to get my head round them for some time. Some are more obvious than others. But trying to determine, for example, whether a penny is a Freeman 21 from a worn specimen, is really difficult.

The top 2 should have been easy enough . the last one is a bit of a state . I also got 2 1860 pennies with them , but they were easy enough to work out (f13 and f15 ). I suppose that practice makes perfect .

f13 and f15

Check out the F15 for a central fishtail - there are some interesting varieties in that subgroup.

I take it you mean on the hair ribbon . Yes ,it is centred . didn't think to check that ,although I had noticed before that some were off-centre

Will be Satin 16 but varieties with the colons and Bun recut.

Or look on Richards site for the different stages :)

no problem ,I will scan it tomorrow (was just about to head to bed) . The ribbon knot and bottom of the bun seem to have more detail than the wear would suggest it should .I think I will need to dig out the other ones I have filed away as doublers ,it is beginning to get more complicated ....and interesting lol.

What reference does the Satin numbers refer too . I have been sticking with Freemans (and grooms for 20th century) ,but have been meaning to get a copy of Gouby .

Satin is a brochure on scarce victorian early bun pennies.

The F15 retouches start at Satin 16-20 which is why without a picture you were better looking on Richards site.

They are differences made to F15 and covered in more depth by Gouby.

Look on Richards site at the retouches / transitional dies.

More for the Anorak collector :D

Why would anyone want to collect anoraks? Coins are much more interesting.

I will need to get a camera , it is hard to make out on the scan , but it has the centre fishtail and a narrower right ribbon .
