1861 Half Penny ID please

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps. I have been looking and reading backwards and forwards with these descriptions of coins and unless it is plainly obvious like no lighthouse:lol: I am at somewhat of a loss. All this incuse leaf veins malarky is wasted on me they all look the same :) with that in mind I have tried to identify a couple of 1861 half pennies as they looked different well lets hope the last 4 hours haven't gone to waste. Did I get the pairings correct ? If you could put your tuppence worths in I will be most grateful . Thanks :)

Richard - I think you're right with the respective obverses, but the reverses I'm having slight difficulty with.

It's one of those situations where ideally you're fully familiar with all the variants before you can feel authoritative enough to comment on one, purely based on Freeman's individual description. Unfortunately I'm not.

I believe @Michael-Roo is a halfpenny guy, and he might be well placed to help you ID.

Cheers Mike. I narrowed down the reverses as any other combination doesn't exist or at least isn't in freemans new reworked addition including the appendix section  and the only 2 reverses with round top lighthouse are C+D for that year and there are no 7+C pairings and reverse E has LCW above the date and reverse F is the chunky Britannia :)

But it's good R16 So quite a rare pairing

And farthings, but my field is early milled.

I'm afraid bun ID leaves me baffled as they all look the same to me!
